With Xavi Hernández’s arrival as head coach of the Netherlands national team, a remarkable footballing journey has come full circle. The Spaniard grew up at Barcelona with the ideas of Johan Cruijff and Rinus Michels, and now has the opportunity to apply that philosophy in the country where many of those ideas originated.

The big question is therefore not just whether Xavi can succeed with the Dutch national team, but whether he can restore their distinctive attacking and dominant style of play.

A Return to Total Football?

Cruijff’s football was ultimately about more than a 4-3-3 formation or having plenty of possession. It was about taking the initiative, creating space, players interchanging positions and keeping opponents in their own half as much as possible.

Xavi’s footballing vision fits well with that approach. As a player, he was one of the leading exponents of Barcelona’s style for many years. As a coach, he has also placed considerable emphasis on possession, positional play and controlling matches.

That means Xavi would not necessarily need to make the Netherlands play Spanish football. His own Spanish footballing education was heavily influenced by the Dutch school. That makes him an intriguing national team coach for a country that has regularly debated in recent years just how attacking and dominant its national side should be.

The idea that attack is the best form of defence fits into that philosophy. A team with the ball gives its opponents fewer opportunities to create danger. For Xavi, however, possession is not an end in itself. It must create space, chances and, ultimately, goals.

Frenkie de Jong’s Role

One player who almost inevitably comes to mind in this context is Frenkie de Jong. The midfielder knows Xavi from their time together at Barcelona and possesses qualities suited to a style in which midfield plays a central role in building attacks.

At the same time, Xavi will need to ensure that the Netherlands do not become dependent on a single player. His biggest challenge is to develop a system in which several players take responsibility for building play, creating chances and winning the ball back.

That also fits more closely with the idea of Total Football: no single player determines how a side plays; instead, the entire team moves as one.

How Do Bookmakers Rate the Netherlands?

For now, bookmakers appear to view the Netherlands primarily as a credible outsider for the European Championship. In the current Euro 2028 betting markets, the odds for the Netherlands translate into an implied probability of approximately 6.7 per cent of becoming European champions.

It is understandable that the Netherlands are not considered among the favourites. Xavi is still at the beginning of his tenure as national team coach and will have to implement his style in a side that has far less training time together than a club team.

That is precisely what makes the upcoming internationals interesting. Results will matter, but so will the way the Netherlands play. Will they dominate possession? Will the team play higher up the pitch? Will they press immediately after losing the ball? And will they manage to take the initiative against strong opponents?

Can Xavi Restore the Netherlands’ Footballing Identity?

The comparison with Cruijff should not be taken too literally. Football has changed, and Xavi will have his own ideas. Nevertheless, the similarity is clear: both approaches are based on the belief that a team should dictate what happens on the pitch.

That makes Xavi’s arrival an intriguing development for the Netherlands. He does not need to reinvent Dutch football, but he can try to restore elements that defined the national team for many years, such as an attacking mindset, taking the initiative, exploiting space and controlling matches through possession.

Only performances on the pitch will reveal whether Xavi can turn the Netherlands from outsiders into a team that once again plays distinctive, dominant Dutch football. Perhaps that is his most interesting assignment: using his Spanish expertise to restore something uniquely Dutch.
