PSV Clinch 26th Eredivisie Title After Dramatic Season Finale

PSV Eindhoven have been crowned Dutch champions for the 26th time in the club’s history, capping off a thrilling Eredivisie season with a decisive 3-1 away win over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday. The victory confirmed PSV’s title triumph, as they finished the campaign just one point ahead of their closest rivals, Ajax. Although Ajax also secured a 2-0 win over FC Twente on the final matchday, it wasn’t enough to overtake PSV at the top of the table.

Led by head coach Peter Bosz, PSV showed remarkable consistency and resilience during the latter stages of the season, especially as Ajax — who had been heavy favorites for much of the campaign — faltered under pressure. At one point, Ajax held a nine-point lead and seemed all but certain to lift the trophy. However, the final weeks of the season brought a surprising twist that turned the title race on its head.

Ajax’s Late Collapse

The downfall of Ajax began unexpectedly on April 20, when they suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat away at FC Utrecht. That result marked the start of a troubling run of form that would ultimately cost them the championship. Ajax followed up with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Sparta Rotterdam, a shocking 0-3 home loss to NEC, and a 2-2 draw with FC Groningen. Despite having one of the strongest squads in the league, they failed to regain momentum in time to reclaim their position at the top.

This stumble opened the door for PSV, who seized the opportunity with both hands. Having lost 0-2 at home to Ajax earlier in the season, PSV bounced back in impressive fashion, embarking on a seven-game winning streak at the most crucial moment of the season. Their performance was marked by grit, determination, and moments of brilliance — none more dramatic than their 3-2 comeback win against Feyenoord in Rotterdam. In that match, PSV overturned a 2-0 deficit and clinched the victory deep into injury time, a result that proved vital in the title race.

Final Matchday Drama

Heading into the final round of fixtures, PSV held a narrow one-point lead over Ajax. The pressure was immense, but Bosz’s side rose to the occasion. With a clinical display against Sparta Rotterdam, PSV ensured there would be no final-day heartbreak. Goals from Ivan Perišić, Luuk de Jong and Malik Tillman helped seal the 3-1 win, sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters and throughout Eindhoven.

Despite Ajax’s win over Twente, the single-point gap remained, handing the title to PSV. The triumph marks a significant achievement for Peter Bosz, who guided the team through an intense title battle and restored PSV to the top of Dutch football.

This season will be remembered for its dramatic twists, late-season reversals, and a title race that went down to the wire. For PSV, it’s a moment of glory — and for Ajax, a painful lesson in the importance of finishing strong.
