It’s all heating up nicely. Only 79 more sleeps until the start of the World Cup.

Let’s look at the state of the Oranje players. As we all know, past performances mean not much. Every tournament, some surprise helped us perform… Unless, we simply failed (1990).

We had Arie Haan and Wim Rijsbergen coming out of nowhere in 1974. We had the PSV players Brands, Wildschut, Poortvliet in 1978. Van Basten in 1988. Elia in 2010. De Vrij and Memphis in 2014. And dare I say it…. Weghorst in the Qatar World Cup, hahahaha.

Lets go through the list:

Justin Bijlow – made his move from Feyenoord to Genoa. Finally fit again. Playing some great games in Italy and hailed as a great signing. He will remain a question mark physically until he had a full season sans problemos. Bijlow is in the squad due to Roefs being injured. The Sunderland goalie is one of the outstanding new players in the EPL and will have his spot back if he plays in the coming EPL games.

Mark Flekken – good goalie. Moved back to Bundesliga. Struggling with fitness a bit but solid.

Bart Verbruggen – still impressing at Brighton and most likely making a move this summer. Big clubs are hovering around his agent.

Nathan Ake – Not playing much for Pep, but started in Carabao Cup final and received massive hugs from his coach afterwards. He will be part of the squad: reliable, experienced, level headed. A guy who will not only perform on the pitch, but also essential as dressing room leader.

Brian Brobbey – Lauded in the EPL. The MOTD team couldn’t stop talking about him. An old fashioned striker, ready to battle with any opponent and able to assist, score and hold up. Definitely in the final squad.

Virgil van Dijk – a shaky season for him, which is a first. Still the leader, the captain, the booming voice, the positional intelligence, a goal scoring threat, all around legend. He’ll lead the team and might retire after we won the World Cup.

Denzel Dumfries – he built up credit in Oranje but hasn’t played much this season. Not necessarily a bad thing. He’ll be fresh, fit and very motivated. He might eye one more big jump to another club after the World Cup and he does remain a unique right full back.

Jeremy Frimpong – stop and start season for Liverpool. When he plays, he is good and delivers. Struggling with the physical side of the English game. But always positive, both in playing style as in personality.

Cody Gakpo – has built credit in Oranje as he was our main man at two tournaments but his star is fading a bit in Liverpool. He still has the skills, but he seems to struggle mentally, a bit. Became predictable and needs a strong partnership on the left in order to shine. At Liverpool, Wirtz playing on the left side will cramp Cody’s style (and space) a bit.

Ryan Gravenberch – the unsung hero, quiet achiever, unique player for the 6 role. Sees the game, can dribble, tackle and score. He will have to compete for the spot with Frenkie, Reijnders and Schouten.

Jorrel Hato – class defender, good personality, was Ajax’ youngest skipper in tough times. Not fully trusted at Chelsea but getting  some game time now under Rosenior. There will be competition from Maatsen but Hato seems the favourite as he can play multiple roles, including centre back.

JP Van Hecke -strong performances by him for years now. Tough defender in the one v one and a great passer of the ball. He is ready for bigger things

Teun Koopmeiners – he is hanging on a thread, with Veerman and Frenkie de Jong as potential rivals. Started life at Juve with disappointments and didn’t impress often in the orange jersey. Midfield competition is killing.

Noa Lang – difficult time at Napoli, but seemingly inspired at Gala, with some good performances. He will remain a potential game changer for Oranje.

Donnyel Malen – revelation of the season at AS Roma. Didn’t disappoint at Aston Villa either, but never trusted to start a series of matches in a row. At Roma, he seems to have invigurated the team and can’t stop scoring as a central striker

Memphis Depay – hard to tell where he is in terms of form and fitness. Koeman will test him this break and a good Memphis has additional value, also off the pitch. As Koeman lacks good alternatives, Memphis will probably have his spot in the squad.

Tijani Reijnders – had a massive start at City and was hailed as a super signing early on, but petered out a bit in the second season. Not longer the first choice for Pep, it seems. He will need to step up to claim the 10 role in Oranje, if Kluivert recovers.

Jerry Schouten – doesn’t have the top season he used to have earlier on with PSV but he’s still one of their best and smartest player. Schouten moved to a CB role with PSV and is a very functional and handy “Swiss knife” to have in the squad

Xavi Simons – life in the EPL needed some adjustments but he is recognised as one of the highlights in Spurs’ disappointing season. Always positive, always intelligent and creative, but at times too light and too easily distracted into despair and mourning. Xavi will be happy with Ruud van Nistelrooy back as assistant coach.

Kees Smit – high potential, the perfect midfielder, always positive, great passer. Needs to be more decisive with assists and goals. Is he a 10, an 8? Or a 6? World Cup might come too early for him, but will be part of the future Oranje as key player.

Lucharel Geertruida – trusted soldier of orange, highly rated by Koeman, Slot and his Sunderland coach. Can play multiple positions, good header, good passer. Lacks real pace but compensates with positioning.

Quinten Timber – tough start of the season with injuries and contract issues at Feyenoord. Move to Marseille did him the world of good. Hailed for his mentality, fight, duel power and football smarts. All round midfielder, probably above Koopmeiners in the hierarchy for Koeman.

Luciano Valente – unique talent, game accelerator and perfect passer. Reminds people of De Bruyne and has unique vision but second half of the season is a bit drab, as Feyenoord has lost it and Valente is slowly drowning as well. I still think a player with his quality needs to go to the World Cup.

Mickey van de Ven – top defender, has everything one needs. Captain at Spurs, but due to disappointing seasons seems to struggle with his discipline. Not yet the leader Spurs needs, but will be at some point in his career. Great option as left back or centre back.

Stefan de Vrij – another trusted soldier, a good lad in the squad, will not give Koeman headaches if he doesn’t play. Still top quality in positioning and reading the game. Strong passer to and a good header of the ball. Until De Ligt ( or another centre back) steps up, Stefan is the man for Koeman.

Wout Weghorst – our pinch hitter. We used to have Kieft, Van Hooijdonk, Makaay and others as pinch hitters and we need to make do with Wout now, but in Qatar he demonstrated his value. He brings energy, fight and opportunism to the team, despite his lesser points and his massive ego.

Candidates for the final World Cup Squad

The following players will potentially wrangle their way into the final squad. Koeman said he wants to have 3 spots for young talents. I think this will be for Valente, Smit and Summerville/Emegha/Meerdink, I believe.

Jurrien Timber will definitely be part of the World Cup team, he’s the best right back on the planet for me (sorry Trent, sorry Denzel). Frenkie will push Koopmeiners out, I believe and we all hope that Roefs will be ready as well to take Bijlow’s place. Joey Veerman will also keep dreaming for a spot, as he has had some top games for PSV this season.

Then there is Justin Kluivert, of course, who seems to be seriously injured, Ken Taylor who is impressing in Italy and Guus Til who must be close to a re-call as he has been scoring for fun at PSV.

I don’t believe in fixed line ups, I think you play the best team for the occasion, but it seems to me that at the World Cup we’ll see  the following core team, with some changes as the games we play will require….

Few things I wanna point out. Gakpos situation at Liverpool. You may recall earlier when writz was not in the picture or was played in the Centre, slot tried his best or was biased starting gakpo.not giving opportunity to chiesa and even playing sboszalai at RB . Eventually now when players are showing their quality through competition and under pressure slot has been forced to bench gakpo and it’s has worked better. This is what competition does and I have long said this, this is what’s missing in NT. While other teams do this and leap in front two fold while the Dutch under conservative coaches are often stagnant and are always catching up. The equation is simply. If this doesn’t change, they will never see the light and reach the end of the tunnel. NEVER.

Secondly bijlows selection again proves koemans criteria and preference for players that are known to him or played under him. I’m mean yeah he probably will be axed when roefs return but you can see the selection criteria for different situations and time. And again you can relate this to hato vs Maatsen omissions and I don’t agree that hatos selection is due to him able to play CB and LB. With van dijk, Van der ven and Ake , there are enough cover up for those positions. And hato being in the same boat and not able to offer anything different then then is just a waste and whereas Maatsen is completely different to what he can offer. When I look at how emery sees Maatsen and uses him just show shows the bench mark between Koeman and him.

    • Johan says:

You want competition for Gakpo but at this moment he is the best option that we have in Holland.

Bijlow is called as we need 3 goalkeepers mainly for training purpose. He is the third option, relax you won’t see him playing a friendly…

      • Emmanual says:

Sorry Johan..You are not watching Liverppol,West ham and Galatasary matches..Anyone who watches those games will say .summerville is the best left winger we have ,Lang is the second best and gakpo is third only..
        1-Summerville
        2-Lang
3-Gakpo …summerville is unplayable on left..We are lucky to have him…

        • Jan says:

At this point in time, you are correct. But Gakpo was it for many seasons and Summerville has had a shaky start to his career. And is currently injured.

  • Jan says:

I am not sure if I understand all you say, Wilson. Gakpo had a top season last season. I don’t see how Slot’s decision to trust him this season is odd? Diaz was let go ( Liverpool policy, older players usually don’t get long term contracts) and Slot will have asked for a forward who can go deep, like Diaz. They got Ekitike. He was supposed to play from the left with Isak in the centre. Rio and Gakpo as alternatives. Clearly, Chiesa is not considered a true option on the left as Slot has hardly used Chiesa from the start. The fact he is currently injured after having played more minutes in my book means Chiesa lacks the physicality for the EPL and might be leaving.

So the tech director wasn’t able to get more options with depth on the left flank (Wirtz and Rio want balls into feet) and this will be a point of focus in the summer for sure. The big change you may have missed is that Slot has gone to a 4-4-2 recently with a box in midfield and Ekitike and Salah as the two forwards.

The Bijlow comment is a bit strange. Bijlow was Oranje’s #1 goalie some years back and injury set backs pushed him out of the picture. He is currently flying for Genoa and if you see better options atm than Bijlow, let me know. I can see how maybe Cillesen or Van Gassel or Drommel might one day be selected (I like Drommel!) but Bijlow is an international already. Van Gassel is not. Cillesen got injured again and I am not sure what other goalies you have in mind. As Johan said: Bijlow is a filler for Roefs. No need to make it into a drama about koeman.

    • Emmanual says:

Gakpo was in roation with Diaz last time..but this year he starts every game, and they loose almost with him and salah,,Liverpool problem is not only Gakpo..they dont have good right back like Timber or jules kunde..Salah is also patthetic like Gakpo..i feel Gakpo can be striker,,if meerdink is not gettig called ,koeman can fix Gakpo,Memphis and weghorst as strikers..with Malen and frimpong on right ,Summerville and lang on left..
Kluivert needs many games and not played much..So Simons and kees smit as playmakers..With Quinten,Schouten,Frenkie,Gravenberch,Reinders to complate midfeild..

  • wilson says:

    @ Jan

Well I shall make you understand then. Firstly you fact finding is poor. Only in the last two games slot has deployed diamond midfield with eketieke and salah and one Eketike and gakpo in another on top where gakpo was deployed on the right. But in others matches before that and during that Afcon it has been 4-3-2-1, 4-3-3 with salah away. Where slot under pressure and after isak injury has heavily rotated the squad. This is what I was trying to point out. This has continued even more when salah came back.

What has Liverpool achieved from this is very clear looking at the form of kettle, szoboszlai.even though I will add that Liverpool are hot and cold

This is one counter argument to sum up gakpos season. and what you mentioned in contrary to him having top season last season which is confusing again. Coz 2025/2026 season show diaz leave and ekitike and writz arrive with others.

Not straying away from my point

Losers vs that Liverpool 4-0 over galatasaray

That Liverpool’s effective attacking display occurred without Cody Gakpo speaks to his disappointing campaign, but this was a night for Liverpool to celebrate its triumph

The highlight here again is who brings what to the table, form and competency and just to mention the effective attacking display was to that of ekitike, writz , salah and szoboszlai

    @ johan

Dude who says gakpo is the best holland currently have. You can use that exact same argument to that of Depay. Is he the best Hollander currently have. The answer is simply no. Just because he is no competition and neither others have had that opportunity to complete with him makes him look invincible. This is the same thing with gakpo but the difference here though is he has competition, likes of lang, Simon’s and kluivert haven’t been rotated to the extent where it can be determined who makes the most difference.

Lastly I have been repeating this for sometime now and will suggest you go back and read it again on when and where status of gakpo thrives.

    • Johan says:

Dude, who is the best right now then?

Lang ? Who plays in a c-competion (Turkye, against Liverpool he was not even a starter)….

Summerville did not even choose for Holland, he can still decide to play for Suriname, himself pointed out!
Summerville was on Koeman´s radar to be called, unfortunally he is injured. Would he do good? We will not know, but there is no time left to really test him in the National Team, just when WC2026 started….

Gakpo has a bad season yes, like Liverpool as a whole, but it doesn´t make him a bad player…. As if he is the blame…

At National team the energy is always different, lets see what will hapen next week… What will Koeman decide. I am not sure that Lang can even play after his injury.

  • vikram says:

Every time I come to this site to get some updates on Oranje, I see pages and pages of Liverpool details. Not sure why is that? Are all Oranje supporters Liverpool supporters by default. If yes, I am an odd man out as I follow Everton and detest Liverpool and in fact, enjoying their up and down season a lot.

In my opinion, Oranje has degraded to a mid-tier European team and their stubborn yet dumb coach (I know him quite well as he was Everton’s coach when our decline started) plays players who are past their prime in out-of-position roles. Nevertheless, I will be seeing the first 3 group games in Dallas, Houston and Kansas City while hoping against hope that they progress deep.

    • Johan says:

Understandable, but 4 of our best players play at Liverpool, and yes some don´t like Gakpo, so lots of discussion around it….

I am not a big fan of Koeman as well, lets see what next week will bring us. No high hopes for the WC as we miss a key component, a killer striker…..

Hopefully the draw will help us a little.

      • wilson says:

        @ johan

The argument was yours that gakpo is the best holland has. And no where I said lang is the best. I clearly pointed out on the importance of rotation taking in account Liverpool example.

Looks like you also not sure what you are writing

Don’t wanna repeats things over and over again. Write this somewhere on the wall, there is nothing new you will see from this Dutch side. Cruise mode vs average teams and the same dragging football and lethargic tatical show down with bigger teams. O mean that koeman

        • Johan says:

If you have a point about the topic, make it. Personal remarks don’t add anything.

Who in your opinion is the best guy on Gakpo´s place? The world cup is not a place to rotate, you want to start with the best team and give them the trust and confidence they are the best option for that spot. Rotating will destroy that confidence….

          • Emmanual says:

At this point gakpo is pathetic on left when compared with Summerville,Lang and simons..So move him to center for injured Memphis thats best for us…simons is doing excellent at left wing..Summerville was unplaayble on left but sadly got injured(Summerville is no 1 choice when fit)..
I remmber wilson said Gakpo is one trick pony,i followed checked on Gakpo for many games ,i found wilson is very much right about him..Summerville,Lang ,simons all are better than Gakpo on left…DO NOT LIVE IN THE PAST,there is ALWAYS A BETTER LIFE/TEAM WITH OUT GAKPO..He is just playing regular because Slot is so biased towards dutch players(which might be normal)..Slot is going to get PUNISHED FOR THAT..wait till end of the season ,slot will be sacked..Xabi alonso will take over liverpool,Gakpo will be kicked out..

    • Jan says:

I might be guilty. I’m a big Liverpool fan, but don’t detest Everton. I have a lot of respect for Everton and I think an EPL without the Mersey side derby would be not as good as with the derby.

I like the coaches at Liverpool (Dutchies) and I love the Dutch players there. I was actually considering a post on Liverpool. I hope you don’t mind.

      • vikram says:

Sorry Jan. “Detest” was a very strong and inappropriate word and I should not have used it. That being said, I actually enjoy the “banter” that happens between the red and blue sides of Merseyside. I have flown down to Liverpool from the US a few times to watch Everton play and will be doing it in 2 weeks for the next derby (the first one in the new stadium).

  • Johan says:

Suriname just lost from Bolívia and will not go to the worldcup.

Probably Summerville will choose for team Oranje… (wishful thinking).

  • Emmanual says:

Summerville was expecting a call from dutch NT..He was supposed to start in these two games.unfortunately he got injured..He never stated he wants to play suriname ..Yes he might have selected suriname if he was not on radar..There is a reason he still didnt choose for suriname..Where did you get that message??
If dutch NT does much disrespect to him he might choose suriname..thats a differnt ball game.
Summervilel is too much better than one trick pony Gakpo…if he select suriname by koeman stupidity ,thats our loss like Hakim zyich.

    • Johan says:

The Dutch media was talking about that he could choose for Suriname.

One trick ponies can actually be very good, remember Robben? Always the same action…

Gakpo has so much more ( international ) experience then Summerville, Summerville needs to show that he is ready for the next step. The jersey can be very heavy…

      Just my 5cts

  • Emmanual says:

Summerville might choose Suriname if we continuously ignore him for avergae one trick ponies ,thats what i feel, but what i heard from media is that koeman rates him high and sees as another option from right wing as well.lets see..

Roben was never one trick pony, that was just narrative ,he could attack from anywhere left or right,he was left footed player on right who often found goals from his own work.He made goals when there was no chance for goal…its stupidity to call Roben one trick pony..He is a legend..

I prefer players who can create magic out of no where, those are the players who wins a WC.We need that…i dont prefer wrongly experieneced failures..i know exactly what am goin to get from Gakpo..Empty pockets Vs any TOP team…
    MY 2 cents.

  • Forza says:

No one’s watching this game vs Norway?

Start of the 2nd half as I write this. Kinda average game. I see some promise in attack but the end product hasn’t been good yet.

Lot of talk on Gakpo, he looks energetic in this game, but he’s lacking accuracy in his passes and shots. Dumfries let a Norwegian get away from him to make a precision bending shot for the goal. Good job with Van Dijk to bring us level. Some decent play by Smit, but special yet. I don’t really see Malen as a striker. And Reinders also not very sharp today.

Let’s see how the 2nd half goes.

    • Johan says:

Watching the game, very nice goal of Norway, before Dumfries Smit did not do very good defensive. Malen unlucky, Gakpo very active, energetic. For me so far MOTM. Weakest Malen & Smit. Smit maybe bit nerveous as it is his first game.

      • Emmanual says:

I always felt Malen is not a great finisher,he doesnt score when it needed..it was berjwin who scored when we need a gaol badly in the past..anyways he is pretty skill full..Smit is first time nervousness and hesistation….dumfries was schooled by that norway kid..i expect this from dumfries..He is the weakest defender we have…thats why we need Timber there with Frimpong as winger ,Malen only as sub..i rate geetrudia a better defender than Dumfries..

  • Jan says:

At least the anti Gakpo rants here will die out, I think. He was great and he has added the “going on the outside” to his game.

  • Emmanual says:

finally he tried to cross in to box and decided to pass.thats great ,that was absent in liverpool..Imagine how much damge Summerville can do if Gakpo can do this ..

  • Victionary_47 says:

Let the overreactions continue til the Ecuador match. With Depay injured, you’d expect RK to give Malen the start at the #9. He’s been flourishing at Roma. Without him, Roma wouldn’t even be in contention for UCL spots.
Now for the Ecuador match, more appropriate to give Brobbey the start. Gonna be a more physical matchup.
