I had this post on future Oranje players getting ready to go and decided to start with some Player Ratings for y’all, as I am seeing so many Anti Blind comments…. I simply have to respond to that.
Thanks to all for joining in and I am totally ok with discussions and differences of opinions. That is all fine.
But some of you (Wilson being one, Tiju being another) simply keep harping on against – usually – one player. Like a hate campaign. As if that player can’t do anything right. Wilson has it with Daley, Tiju had it with Dirk. I think both had it with Memphis.
We can all safely say that Dirk Kuyt is a Dutch icon. Memphis’ stats are through the roof and Daley is the connaisseur’s player.
Yes, Daley made a defensive error this weekend vs Heerenveen (and they scored) but he also had an array of superb passes. Any coach will take the defensive weakness, as no defender is 100% tight. Look at De Ligt at Juve. Or this weekend Pique allowing two goals at Barca. Just score one more up front, guys!
Again, I am fine with people pointing out the negatives, but I believe it becomes a witch hunt when:
- they can’t add anything positive, but just keep on repeating the same old stuff… Wilson on Blind’s defensive weaknesses and Tiju did this with Kuyt’s lack of technique (both are wrong, by the way… Blind is a tremendous defender, but simply slow… Kuyt had magnificent match technique, but he wasn’t a circus artist, like Vanenburg or Davids)
- irrelevant things are brought into the discussion (like Danny Blind protecting son Daley)
- disrespectful arguments are used (“Sonny Boy” which points to the Danny – Daley family link)
Every player has negatives, apart from a couple world class players we have… That – for me – applies to Virgil and Frenkie. All other Oranje players do have some weaknesses… Memphis, Gini, De Ligt, Blind…all of them.
Coaches tend to pick the team which is able to 1)strengthen each other strengths and 2) compensate each others weaknesses… This is probably why all Dutch NT coaches pick Blind. His weaknesses can be compensated, while his strengths are really needed.
Frank de Boer, Louis van Gaal, Guus Hiddink, Ronald Koeman, Erik Ten Hag… what connects these coaches? Answer: They all rate Daley Blind really high.
Why? Because of his speed and his goals!
Just kidding. They rate Daley really high because of his 1) ability to read the game, 2) his exquisite passing range, 3) his thrifty possession, 4) his positioning.
Erik Ten Hag: “Daley Blind is my extension on the pitch. He sees what needs to happen first and gets the message across to the other players.”
Dusan Tadic (Ajax #9): “I love Daley Blind behind me. He is our Beckenbauer.”
Blind’s last season at Ajax (centre back) is considered to be one of the key performers for the Amsterdam club. By analysts, football commentators, supporters, ex-players and by coaches. The only two people who don’t seem to see this are Wilson and Tiju. Apparently. But who knows? They might have way better insights in football than Van Gaal, Ten Hag and Koeman….
Complaining about Blind’s lack of speed is like complaining about Overmars’ lack of header goals. Or complaining about Bergkamp not stopping any penalties. Or complaining about Dumfries not being able to dribble past 3 opponents. Or complaining about Memphis weak sliding tackles.
We should be grateful to have Blind in our squad, like the coaches are all grateful and most of the Oranje fans are. I’m fine with people not “liking” a certain player… I’m personally not a big fan of Strootman, but I am a huge Oranje fan and I support the lads and the coaches and I would never vomit all this negativity about players without any real substance.
So, lets have a look at our squad.
Jasper Cillesen
Maybe not world class (like Neuer, De Gea or Ellison) but definitely a top notch goalie. Good enough for Oranje. And with Vermeer, Krul, Bizot and Zoet all at the right age and a couple of youngster making their name (Bijlow, Scherpen, Kelle Roos) we should be ok for shot stoppers.
Daley Blind
World class versatile player. Master in reading the game and positioning. Great passing and distribution. He sent Memphis away for a corner and delivered it on Van Dijk’s head, leading up to the 1-2.
Virgil Van Dijk
Needs no further kudos. World Class with capital letters. Will win the Ballon D’Or. Strong. Tall. Quick. Composed. Leader. Concrete. Tower. Goal threat in the opponent box.
Matthijs De Ligt
On his way to become Virgil Mark II. Only 19 years old. Courageous. Tall and strong and quicker than you think. Great build up pass. Needs to develop tactically and in terms of positioning. Looked great at Ajax thanks to mentor Blind (something he’ll miss at Juve).
Denzel Dumfries
Still in development. Late bloomer. Strong body, quick, athletic, tall and good header. Still lacks smooth technique and is probably the weak spot in the current team. Alternatives Veltman and Tete lack the forward thrust Denzel offers. Karsdorp is probably a better option on all counts, bar the header capabilities.
Frenkie de Jong
The brains in midfield. Oozes class. Velvet touches, great dribbles and that winner mentality allowing him to win balls back. Explosive speed. Tremendous vision and courage.
Marten de Roon
Strongholder in midfield. More destroyer than creator. Has had great moments and has had terrible moments. Passing and technique are average. Work rate and tackling is top notch. A water bearer in the team. Good to have in the squad but we should have a player on his spot who can do it all (like Davids, Cocu or Van Bommel before him).
Gini Wijnaldum
Marathon Man. Strong in possession. Fierce without the ball. Amazing mentality and wonderful technique. Works and sacrifices himself without a problem. Needs a cooler head in the box and should score more. Does need too many chances for a goal. Could use a bit more vision to aid the team in the build up, Frenkie-style. When on fire, good for 1,5 player.
Quincy Promes
Jack-of-all-Trades. Good runner with and without the ball. Can score goals. Can assist. Can play alsmost everywhere on the pitch and never complaining when moved from left winger to right winger to right full back. Positive mentality and unpredictable. He is the first to have to worry for his spot with Bergwijn and Malen on the up and up.
Memphis Depay
World class potential, suffering a bit from ego and overconfidence. Can work magic if all goes his way and can be agitatingly annoying when things don’t work out. Sensational right foot. Confident. Cheeky. Wonderful vision and superb ball skills. Strong body as well.
Ryan Babel
The Come Back Kid. Had a great spell in his younger days, with his speed, his hip-shot and opportunistic playing style. Came back from the cold and is more a team player now. Covering the left flank, tracking back, supporting players with dummy runs and scoring important goals. Tremendous work rate and the wise old mentor in the squad. Might lose his spot in the starting eleven but Koeman will probably keep on selecting him due to his off-pitch qualities in the group.
Davy Propper
A light version of Frenkie de Jong. Has similar ball capabilities, has tremendous vision as well and great in the build up. Should score more (like Frenkie!) and lacks Frenkie’s explosiveness and speed. Should be player at a better club as he will definitely play better in a stronger team. Quiet achiever and in my view a better player to start with than De Roon.
Nathan Ake
The perfect 12th man. Can slot into midfield, central defence or left back. Perfect mentality, focused, more than average ball skills, strong header of the ball and great team player. Won’t get into the team as long as De Ligt and Van Dijk are ahead of him but a great utility player to have.
Donyell Malen
Brings something fresh and new. Very quick, with and without ball. The ability, smarts and willingess to make dummy runs and keep the opponent busy. Cold as ice in the box and has eye for the team mate in a better position.
Steven Bergwijn
All round attacker. Quick, good ball skills, dribbling ability and knows how to score a goal. Used as a winger, striker and #10 at PSV, and still looking for his best position. Might be the ideal stand-in for Memphis, or he might push Promes out of the team.
Patrick van Aanholt
Highly athletic full back, covering the whole flank. Defensively vulnerable but strong going forward and the ability to score. Has a canon of a left foot but tactically naive.
Joel Veltman
Versatile player, able to play right back, left back and centre back. Lacks length for the centre back role but still a strong header of the ball. Overall a good player, without any real apparent strengths. Focused and mentally strong. Lacks speed and won’t cover the whole flank. Tough in the personal duels.
Luuk de Jong
Wonderful header of the ball. Courageous and a real leader. Can score goals, but lacks speed and technical skills in the smaller spaces. Useful as pinch hitter, not as a starter. Beats Weghorst in the pinch hitter category. Good in hold up play too.
Stefan de Vrij
No nonsense defender. Fully focussed and mentally strong. Good build up pass and great header of the ball. Not the quickest but also not the slowest. Lacks the “Virgil” charisma but could well be a starter in the Oranje eleven. Keeps head above water as a defender, in the Land of Defenders.
Tonny Vilhena
Again, multi functional player. Can play in all positions in midfield and left full back or wing back. Will warm the bench (like Ake) without complaining. Will always earn his Heineken. Amazing energy and work ethic. Good left foot and tremendous drive. Sometimes over does things with his abundant energy and tends to run with the ball too much. Perfect team player.
Steven Berghuis
Top technical skills, wonderful vision and winner mentality. Lacks speed and wants the ball in his feet. Has a wand of a left foot and tremendous goal scoring and assisting abilities as a result. Lacks body and power at times and loses his temper easily. Still looking to find his ideal spot in the team. Not an out and out winger, but also not a real midfielder. Ideal #10 in a 4-3-3 with two holding mids. Probably never headed a ball in his life.
Justin Kluivert
Prodigal son. Wonderful speed and almost perfectly two footed. Can play left and right up front. Needs to play more consistently and decision making needs to improve (quite normal for a young player). Still a lot to develop but unpredictable and has great confidence and composure. This needs to be his season with Roma.
Kevin Strootman
At times a pitiful picture. Was considered the natural successor to Mark van Bommel and even given the captains armband at some point but two massive knee injuries took the sharpness away and Strootman without the legs to do what Strootman does best is not a good Strootman anymore. Lost his starting spot and might lose his spot in the squad once Van de Beek and players like Rosario or Eijting, Ihattaren and/or Stengs make their way into the squad. With De Roon, De Jong and Propper in the midfield, Strootman will not much longer be needed… Koeman does hail his attitude and leadership off the pitch and will probably not write him off until after the EC2020.
Are there players out there that should be in the squad in place of some player above?
I don’t think so. Wout Weghorst, some say. He would be used as pinch hitter, I don’t think Koeman will pick a team that would suit his “normal” game. And for pinch hitting tasks, I agree with Koeman: Luuk de Jong is better.
Obviously, I am not in favour of taking Daley Blind out. Within months, I do expect Stengs to take Berghuis position soon, while Van de Beek will push Strootman out, I think.
But it takes more than a list of names… It’s up to Koeman to pick the players that form the best team, not necessarily the eleven best players. And to concoct a tactics that works with the players, and offers us the best chance to win, while playing attractive football.
Future Stars of Oranje
We were so spoilt for choice in the past. We had Ruud Geels, Dick van Dijk, Johan Cruyff, Cor van der Gijp and other going for the striker role in the 70s. Or we had Van Basten, Boskamp, Kieft, Gilhaus in the 80, Makaay, Kluivert, Van Hooijdonk, Hasselbaink, Van Nistelrooy in the 90s and the likes of Huntelaar, Van Persie, Kuyt, Robben and more in the 00’s… Where are the world class strikers of today? Weghorst, Dost, Luuk de Jong? Nah… not world class.
Vincent Janssen? Nope. But we do see some amazing talent coming up, able to take some pressure of golden wonder boy Memphis Depay (just look at his stats).
Donyell Malen PSV (20 years old)
The obvious choice, after his amazing run in his first two matches for Oranje and the 5 goals he scored last weekend! Boom! Developed at Ajax, made his way to Arsenal and returned to Holland (PSV) to get some playing time. His key quality: skill in confined spaces, speed and the willingness (!) to keep on making the dummy runs!
Cody Gakpo PSV (20 years old)
Blessed with a right foot like David Beckham. Long legs, good stride. Amazing vision and a cool head. Like with Robben, you know he cuts back to his fave foot but he’ll keep on doing it and he’ll get away with it. Very elegant player, who could well go the same route as Phillip Cocu (from left winger to strong holder in midfield and ending up as skipper at Barca).
Myron Boadu AZ Alkmaar (18 years old)
Lightning quick player at AZ. returning from tough injury, but scoring easily again. Nose for the right spot and cool as ice in the box. Still missed easy chances so needs to work on his decision making. Very likeable chap too. Down to Earth. The real deal, this one!
Mitchell van Bergen Heerenveen (19 years old)
Was 16 years old when making his debut for Vitesse, the youngest player ever (for Vitesse). He ended up warming the bench and made a move to Heerenveen where he is a starter and he plays for Young Oranje. Compared to Robben when he broke through but his key strength is his speed. Mitch is one of the quickest players you’ll see, capable of scoring and providing the assist.
Calvin Stengs – AZ Alkmaar (20 years old)
A highly playful winger, a one-of-a-kind player whose perfect position needs to be found, as Stengs can play central striker (and score), play winger and provide and play midfielder and make the play. Very gifted, great vision, athletic and effective. Missed the Young AZ experience due to a terrible injury keeping him out a full season. Everything is effortless with Stengs and it’s only a matter of time or he’ll claim the right winger role in Oranje, like Ziyech plays that role for Ajax.
Mo Ihattaren PSV (17 years old)
Not a real forward, but an offensive midfielder / playmaker but for me, the most impressive talent since…well…Frenkie de Jong. Ihattaren’s name presented itself already some years ago when he impressed in Oranje under 15 and his reputation keeps on building. Once you have watched him play 45 minutes, you can see what a potential world class player he is. He is young, but he reads the game, plays without fear, has the physique of a 24 year old and has everything to end up at Real Madrid or Man City within 2 years and be a force at those clubs to be reckoned with. The only issues with him: 1) keeping him healthy, 2) keeping him grounded and 3) making sure he will pick Oranje to play for, as Morocco is very keen to enlist his services.

And there is more coming, in the group just below the lads described above. We know the names: Tahith Chong (19) at ManU. Joshua Zirkzee at Bayern (18), Daishawn Redan (18) at Hertha. Brian Brobbey (17, Ajax) and Naoufal Bannis (17, Feyenoord) impress as well and are on the verge of making more minutes in the first teams.
Excellent article Jan. This is an accurate rating. A few things I want to add based on my opinion:
_ We have fast CBs to cover for Blind so I would not worry much about his speed. I will worry more about the RB position since there is noone showing consistency there. Dumfries has some excellent game and some shocking game, so did Tete.
_ De Jong’s ball control is super. His weakness is sometime he lack some final ball in opposition’s box, might not matter for us since he will play CM anyway. At Barca, his position is higher but he seems adapting better and better.
_ I thought Wijnaldum is doing well for the NT, he has contributed a lot of goals and assists since playing as AM.
_ Luuk De Jong has not scored any goal despite Sevilla is top of La Liga. If this keep happening, he might be out of the picture soon.
_ Wout Weghorst actually not only play pinch hitter but also has good build up play. He might not have the speed that Koeman want for the ST position. Hopefully, Malen will keep developing and be the ST we need.
_ De Roon is decent player but I don’t see he fits into the system. Against weaker team, we will not need him. Against stronger team, I thought we might need to move the ball faster.
_ Very excited group of youngsters coming up. Hopefully, they can develop well and slot into the NT soon.

Virgil Van Dijk was frequently omitted by Louis van Gaal,Danny Blind ..Not just him many dutch coaches..Father Danny played Daley as LCB many times and he failed miserably as well Finally When an injury happend to Blind Virgil got his place…Look at where Virgil is……..
Daley Blind is skilled,intelligent versatile player.No doubt..thats why he moved to Ajax from Manchester and he understood he wont be playing first 11 in HIGH PACED EPL games ..So it was smart wicked choice for ajax where he has no competition for LCB.The problem is when we face a tough opponent he stays back and this affects our team ,He becomes an extra Burden for Virgil/Babel ..That pulls back our rythem..it restricts our natural play.this cannot be done in crunch finals,semi finals ,quater final Vs Belgium,France,Germany,Portugal,etc We will be doomed by this action. i would say exactly like Kuyt benefitted from extra scoring capability of RVP,Roben,sneijder.As we were gurenteed that when these 3 fails to score ,we will loose,kuyt is not going to get it done.kuyt best spot was defensive midfeilder as he also possed vision and he could even play as RB or LB,his best tournament was wc2014..
However i must agree that he Blind 1000 times better than Dumfries while going forward…
Dumfries is more like black hole,once you pass to Dumfries,either you will loose possession or u will get a inaccurate pass or poor pass, or else he wont connect to that pass which you gave to him.
kluivert is no where near stengs or Berghius..stengs is our leriy sane or New Roben…He must start thats no brainer..

Franck Leboeuf has nailed it and again its coming not from an ordinary orange fan like me but somebody who is the business.my point here being, this is coming from the outside of the box and and not inside as what you have mentioned from the typical dutch point of view about what the dutch coaches think about daley Blind. No body argued across the table as to what you are trying to potray the picture about Blind from dutch coach perspective .If you will argue here that the dutch coaches know better,then its bogus because a smart and tatical coach will always know where to hit the hardest. (Nations league final) This why it takes 11 players to win a silver wear, not 10,9….3,2,1 players and this very much becomes a determining factor during the knock out stages.This is difference between our opinons and also the reason why we are on cross roads. You wanna see things from the typical dutch point of view and im looking things from a open minded perspective.
Again I quote what Leboeuf said” the truth of what you are seeing now, might not be the truth of what you gonna see after nine months” like I said the water is calm right now because of van dijk. The moment you take van dijk out of the equation and who knows, the part you said about compensating blinds weakness with the strength will become a ghost. The weaknesses will swallow his strength. This is what the dutch coaches are not thinking and until it will strike like what happened to strootman then they will start looking for the umbrella.what im trying to hightlight is why not get the umbrella before it rains.again the emphasis being building more depth, rotate. You look on the right. Why so many players have been rotated there. Janmaat,Tete,Karsdorp,hateboer,Dumfries,Veltman. Did they have weakness?
If im correct then Andrew mentioned this, if van dijk gets injured koeman must be having a strategy. If you are telling me a backline of Ake,De Vrij and De ligt or Blind,De Vrij and De ligt in the absence of van dijk can hold the line especially in critical stages, once again its just hypocritical thinking.
I can go on writing but I will stop here but the facts remains the same if you are weighing the strength and weakness then there are others as well who are in the same boat as Blind but for some unknown and unexplained reasons their strength to the weakness cannot be compensated.
Problem is not just Blind,Dumfries is crap going forward.Against Top Team Blind hides behind star players like Virgil,Deligt and Babel.This limits our game..Also Dumfries is hard defender you cannot outmuscle or outrun him in defense..
I dont like selecting Luuk,kluivert over stengs and boadu..Stengs and Boadu has special edge.So when Depay and babel fails ..these lads would SAVE us..that i am not seeing in Luuk and kluivert..
Ake should be sarting as our main DM…this will make frenkie and Gini more free..Ake is quality ,Stengs is quality both should start..
Tiju, I don’t think Blind is a problem at all. And Dumfries was the assist king of the Eredivisie two seasons back so it’s not always so easy to make these assessments.

Ake won’t start as DM, that is Frenkie’s spot.
Boadu is just back from serious injury and needs 15 good games at AZ and in Europe.
Ok, I watched it. And I don’t get it. You say skip to 4.24 but the video stops at 4.24 :-).
So I went to watch him speak about Holland and he basically said:
“I had to select some teams and Holland is good but they’re coming from a nightmare period but in 9 months it could be all different. But the attack, I don’t know if Babel and Depay will be able to keep it going and in defence their left side has problems with Blind”.
That is all he said.
A former French player with an opinion.
I still rate the opinion of people who actually worked with Blind and coached him and trained with him MUCH higher than a guy hired for a quick and dirty opinion.

Van Gaal is in all aspects a better football analyst than LeBeouf. I mean. What does LeBeouf do now?
Van Gaal is one of the most successful coaches in our history and worked with Daley for years.
Also the stats don’t back up LeBeouf.
On the other hand, all teams have weaknesses. Juve has weaknesses defensively. Bonucci and Chiellini both lack speed. So any coach playing against Juve with these two in the team will say “try and play over the top and beat them with pace”.
That is normal in football. Any team has weaknesses.
So our team has a player who lacks speed? Big deal.
He never drowned, not in Oranje, not in Man U, not in Ajax.
Did Blind ever make mistakes? Yes.
Like ANY player (Beckham. C Ronaldo, Bonucci, Thiago Silva, Terry, Maguire, Kompany).

No we dont need static typical strikers,We can win it with Villa done for spain,..
Depay,Boadu,Stengs,Danjuma,Mallen,Cody gakpo ,Noa lang all can finish better than average strikers and past kuyt type of strikers.we have now..We will have fluid game as well,
The moment we started dropped Dost and strootman from starting 11.we became like beast team..Depay is 1.76 but he is 1000 times better than Dost,luuk and Weghorst..

Riedewald was a top prospect at Ajax and if he wouldnt have followed FDB I think he would have been in NT now. His transfer to Paderborn in bundasliga fell on the deadline day and has had torrid time at palace. Like el ghazi,still can pull the strings together but euros would be question mark. He has being mainly deployed at DM by Hodgson and if he gets to play there more or moves to another team where he can get minutes he could be an upgrade to De Roon.Newcastle is rumored to be loaning him in transfer window

I think you are as usual exgeratating without any course. Sari is a no nonsense coach and if you are saying Sari is wrong for benching de ligt then you need to shower. Sari is type of coach who wont even hesitate to bench ronaldo if there is case to do so. You are complaining, sarri shouldnt be benching deligt. Hello, he clearly is struggling, what do want the coach to do? This is what I always talk about rotation and healthy competition and unfortunately for De ligt if he doesnt find his form quickly he will become like David Luiz when Sari was at Chelsea.
Why do you think Juventus invested in Demiral in the first place. He already has serie A experience compared to de ligt. I mean, how can you expect a coach to bench a experienced defender like Bouncci to a defender who has no experience in serie A.
The case for de ligt is clear, he needs to start giving big performance otherwise forget about him gettig lolli pops from sari.

AZ had very unimpressive game against poor ADO. I was not surprised as AZ had very difficult mid-week game against Partizan. However, AZ won, which under similar circumstances would have never happened under John van den Brom. That is why I will start with Arne Slot.
The young coach of AZ in contrast to JvdB always keeps his head cool. He is very pragmatic and he is building his team as a puzzle using an individual strength of each player to complement the weakness of his teammate. That is the reason why AZ is very organized and successful defensively this season so far. You might argue that AZ have not played stronger teams in Eredivisie yet and that might be partially true but their mid-weak game against Partizan showed that AZ under Arne Slot and AZ under JvdB are two different teams. In today game Arne gave a good playing time to Hadzisiakos and Clasie. He understands that without rotation of the players AZ will be out of gas until winter. Overall, I am very happy with Arne and I think we are getting another potentially great coach for Oranje.
Bizot had sort of day off. ADO did not threaten much partially because of great defensive efforts.
Koopmeiners was a bit rough today. He made many small silly mistakes, lost many times possessions and his passes lacked accuracy. However, he scored beautifully from the spot and contributed to AZ victory.
Myron was almost invisible as he did not have much support from his teammates and looked quite tired. This goes along very well with the coach’s assessment. A. Slot recently stated that one of the developmental opportunities for Myron is to learn how to play equally well two back to back games.
Stengs looked fresher than his teammates, he did several very good passes, returned timely back and was good in possession.
Finally, Clasie. He was one of the best players in the team controlling midfield very well. Due to the lack of playing time, he still can not keep the rithm of the entire game but today he played solid 80 minutes and I was very happy with his performance.
I am looking forward to the mid-week game against Feyenoord. Let’s see what AZ will offer against one of the traditional top three.

I see the same stuff on here a lot. Comparing Stengs to Kluivert etc. And everyone is always calling for the kids to be included in Holland’s first team. We see Stengs playing well in the Eredivisie and assume he’s at an International level of football, but then I wouldn’t be surprised to see his U21 Team fail to qualify for the Euros.
I guess the question would be, if Roma and AZ were to trade players, Kluivert for Stengs. How would each do? I’m sure Kluivert would probably be scoring week-in, week-out in the Eredivisie, and I think Stengs would struggle to get on the scoreboard in Serie A.
Yes, it would likely be the case and it would hinder the development of Stengs. According to those suggestion, we should replace about 1/3 or 1/2 players in the national team and call kids. Who did that before? Well, the coaches who lead us to the glory of Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018. And guess what? Same people here suggest to call Kluivert, Dumfries before 🙂
I think Koeman did a good job so far to integrate new players into the team. It is hard to do that as in national team. On one side, you need to get result and you only have limited matches to build chemistry between players, on the other side, old players might go out of form and they need to be replaced by new one or if some super star come up then they need to get called up.
Compared to this line up against Sweden https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=276483/match=300331900/index.html, he has integrated De Ligt, De Jong well into the team. A couple of other players that show potential: Dumfries, Malen and Bergwijn. I would argue that calling Danjuma and Dilrosun actually has bad effect on their development and there is always a risk to call young players into national team.
I don’t really know if we should call Dest and Ihattaren into the team yet. But if the other nations are calling them just to lock down their choice then we might need to do something also.
The best example is when Marco van Basten was coach.
He kicked out van Nistelrooij and van Bommel, in place of Kuyt, Huntelaar and more kids (all who developed into great players).
After winning 1-0 against Luxembourg, 3-0 with Belarus, 1-1 with Bulgaria, 1-0 against Albania, 0-0 with Romania and 2-0 against Slovenia he was sitting 2nd in qualifying. Then he begged van Nistelrooij and van Bommel to come back realizing the kids didn’t have it.
Famously benched van Nistelrooij against Portugal in place of Kuyt.
And again, these kids (van Persie, Robben, Kuyt, Huntelaar, Sneijder, van der Vaart) all developed into world class players, but at the time they couldn’t cut it.
Yup, giving debut to youngster at right time is a required skill for good coach. Phasing out old player is also a skill. Van Basten was just starting his coaching career when he was national coach and made these mistakes 🙁
So far, I think Koeman does keep an eye on new players and gave debuts to many already. I see nothing suggests that he will miss out on new talents on the horizon. I thought he could give more chance to Van de Beek and Weghorst instead of Strootman and Luuk De Jong. But the result was really good so who am I to complain?

Their form did not get better after the match with national team, indeed their form regress. Young player does not get used to playing at highest level without resting. Also, national debut will have media spot light and other effects on their personal life. Dilrosun was injured in the national match.

I think it’s very clear what Koeman’s line-up will look like in the Euro’s.
The back line will be Blind, de Ligt, van Dijk, Dumfries.

The front 3 will have Depay and Babel, with Promes or Malen fighting for the last spot.
Obviously if Stengs or Kluivert steps up they can unseat Babel, but the idea of that this line-up which he has been pretty firm with will take a drastic change is a bit absurd.

what I think is, NT has had an early surge with respect to some key players with koeman tactically looking dominant with some big teams who are still fine turning. you look at teams like france,Italy, Germany,spain, they will leave it late towards the completion of their domestic leagues before be putting the final touches to the squad.it is then it would be critical to compare the current NT surge to that of their charge. the advantage with this countries also is it wont take their players long to transition from club to international level especially with when they have them playing at highest level in both domestic and European level.

Historically AZ was blamed for the inability to win the traditional top three. Although this year Feyenoord could be hardly called top three, AZ did a fantastic job today due to amazing tactical scheme that Arne Slot designed for this game and of course our fantastic trio of forwards Idrissi- Boadu – Stengs.
Arne Slot decided to strengthen the right flank as Right back Swensson was not performing well. As a help to Swensson he also started Sugawara as a right winger Although the latter is a right back too. Stengs was moved to the playmaker position at the expense of not a 100% fit Dani de Wit. This tactics paid off as Feyenoord was unable to penetrate AZ defense from the flanks. First 35 minutes AZ played very cautiously and patiently. This patient way of playing is something that I never saw under John van den Brom. The first goal was scored after a fantastic counter attack which was orchestrated by Idrissi. In general Idrissi – Wijndal connection has been very well. When Idrissi is with the ball he already knows that Wijndal accelerates on his flank and closer to the opponent’s goal area he gives a nice pass to Wijndal without looking at him. Wijndal sends a parallel pass looking for Myron. That is how the first goal was scored.
Myron was very good entire game. His ability to find a right position in the heart of the opponents defense is really fascinating. Today his work rate was also very high.
Wijndal had a great game too. He demonstrated fantastic physical strength. basically he was running up and down entire game and Steve Berghuis did not have a chance to pass him.
Stengs played as a playmaker and I liked him a lot in that role His dribbling was so great today. He sees very well the field and knows where to pass to increase the pressure onto opponents. He also increased the accuracy of his passes today.
Bizot did 2-3 very important saves within first 30 minutes that gave a lot of confidence to defense.
Papa Vlaar also had a great game today.
Koopmeiners was very solid. He is a great captain but I would like to see more of him. He suffered several times a loss of possession and his passes were not very accurate either. However, he is a fighter and due to his strong physic he was able to stop many times Feyenoord’s attacks.
Finally, Midtsjo vs Clasie. Midtsjo has been Slot’s first choice as a central defender. He was great in that position. However, it looks like he suffers from minor problems and past two games he was not very good. My impression is that for the next game, Clasie might be preferred over Frederik. Clasie played only 10 minutes but I truly enjoyed him.
With this victory AZ moved to the third place, and a point behind of Ajax and PSV. AZ also conceded less than any teams in Eredivisie: 3 goals in seven games.
Let’s see how AZ will play against MU.

Yes they did create chances but my emphasis is more on what koeman couldnt pull out tatically compared to the earlier meeting where NT thrashed them 3-0 and in which koeman tatically outclassed santos in the first half only. Yes the portguess looked more hungry and they did create more chances then the NT but what needs to be considered here is how they turned it around within a space of 3 months. Its simply, santos did his homework and with a diffrrent approach and changes,NT were left out stagnant.
This is what Im afraid of will happen again to koeman if he doesn’t change his approach especially when more teams will have their key areas polished up as the euros draws nearer. Change in his approach,I mean have his plan B execuated before incase if the need arises the players will be more adapted rather than on the last hour where they might not be able to execuate it to their fullest.
Impact players is another key areas for koeman which he mee6ds to increase more depth especially in that midfield area.
Luuk,Propper,Berghuis,Vilhnea ,Strootman are no impact places, well again with the munutes they have played. If you ask me here then who should be the impact players. My amswer will this where koemam should be looking at more rotation. Malen definitely will be of them and as the season continues, if there are other players who perform exceptionally well then why not give them a call up.
I also see the tide turning on Groeneveld and he might be the next victim of moving to a mid table club in epl. He has already proved his credentials at the highest level and without a doubt he is better than bergwijn. Lets see in the coming months if koeman will give him the call up.

I also think it would be wise to invest in jasviro Dilrosun rather than in those wingers whose strong hold is mostly cutting inside from thr left and on the right are tend to become invisible.Dilrosun has good left foot and can dribble both in and outside.the good part about playing with left footed wingers is they tend to stretch the defenders apart compared to those cutting inside end up cluse

Ihatarren would be the missing puzzle and key of getting world cup or not.
There is no other play that got the same talent as this boy has. and he is only 17. cannot imagine 5 years later when he’s only 22 how strong this guy cane become. Wijnaldum and Van de Beek are good but not talented comparable to Ihatarren.
It would be a disaster if he chooses morocco. And that would be a stupid decision also to himself.
Danjuma started to play again I hope he wont get injured again after few weeks. He got talent and I want to see his name asap back on the oranje squard. He needs to score again otherwise Koeman wont call him back.
Dilorsun got huge talen and the kind of dribbler that is an upgrade of Quincy Promes.
With Stengs and Boadu , we will have a strong squad.
Kluivert is hardworking and running like madness. But he doesn’t know how to score goals (score 1 goal in 20+ games..) and given this fact, I don’t see him better than any of the three (stengs, danjuma and Dilrosun or even Boadu).
Wijnaldum score a goal tonight which make liverpool winner i know it was goalkepper failure. Also van dijk was super tonight. He get man of the match and 4 or 5 time survive liverpool also his paasing was too well. Really play well tonight.
Another good news is about de beek who assist a goal and also get man of the match for ajax game.

Dumfries is a modern day fullback.his strong hold is offensively going forward and thats what big teams look for. Defensively they have players who can cover him up when situation arises. Van der weil was in the same boat as well at PSG.
There has been a lot of criticism about dumfries performance recently but what people dont realize is that if he comes up with a team where he continously has to be defending or his flank is getting raided, he will faulter.thats tetes department and with tete you wont get too see dumfries overlapping runs.
I also think Koeman has parted ways with tete.tete has been active at Lyon, on and off the bench and his non selecional in the provisional squad is an indication of that.im suspecting its leading up to that incident when he replaced dumfries and suffered the hamstring injury seconds after coming on. Was it vs England where they were forced to play with 10 man in the last few minutes. I remember he received the benfit of doubt from koeman over hateboer even though he was frozen at Lyon. Looks like Veltman will be now Dumfries backup.

Dumfries is still same,He was better than Tete..i was wrong,i feel better with karsdorp and Dest for better fluid football..He defends well..But a total crap while going forward..But he moves irrespective of Effectiveness..i felt teammets at NT is giving him very less passes,they try to avoid him most of the time,only he gets ball when they dont have other options..Dumfries could be a back up RB..He can handle Mbhapees i am convinced that..

im not sure if AZ had a new contract for him on the table but by all means he should have stayed at AZ. Utrecht has three attacking midfielders playing in the midfield. Gustafson, Maher and Van de streek. its any bodies guess how they are operating in that formation.he needed European football this season to raise his stakes. not sure if he will just by playing in eredivisie.

I honestly was unable to watch this game but based on media, Stengs starred again. He came as a replacement for the injured Gudmundsson and was superb. Heracles goalkeeper saved 7 times keeping score sheet clean in the first half. In the second AZ was too strong for Heracles.

Yes AZ will play all their “home” games in The Hague which has an artificial turf. It is not an ideal case, particularly, for Calvin and Myron who are off the terrible injuries but it is what it is. AFAS stadium (AZ home stadium) is planned to be ready by winter.

Im not much intrested in euros, even though NT will be a good team, they still gonna fall short, but the prospect of having a world class team and capable of winning the WC is in the pipe line and if koemans fails with the upcoming new generation,he shouldnt be just be shown the exist but kicked out of the door.
There has been alot of talks about how under koeman,NT has reborn. I dont think it is just about him but also because of the emergence of van Dijk,De Ligt and frenkie who have steadied the ship.
I dont think talents like Dilrosun, Boadu,Adekanye,Ihattaren,Gakpo,wijndal, will make the euro squad but come world cup in two years time these guys especially will be ready to burst on to the biggest stage.

The guys who are following him will know this and he is just on another level at Jong Ajax.ajax will be foolish to overlook at him next season especially with the south american contingent who are currently dominating ajax. It will also be a big waste if he is lost a to big club at an early age.Chong?.
In short Van Dijk and Depay will be in their absolute prime,Frenkie and De ligt will be thriving at juventus and Barcelona respectively. If Reis also breaks into Barcelona, NT will just explode in 2022.

KNVB director Nico-Jan Hoogma has confirmed talks have been held with Sergino Dest and Mohamed Ihattaren about their international future with the Netherlands.

Sergino Dest is likely to be called up by the U.S national team for competitive fixtures this month so the KNVB must act quickly to convince the Ajax right-back to pick the Netherlands.
Talks were held between Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, Dest and Nico-Jan Hoogma last week.
Hoogma confirmed this to Voetbal International, “Ronald Koeman and I had a conversation with Dest and his agent.
“Trying to convince a player is always difficult, because the arguments are limited. We cannot use money, there is no transfer policy like at a club, nor do we make a moral appeal because of an alleged indebtedness to a country.
“Ronald and I tell a purely substantive story, in which we sketch a sporting picture and explain why we think they are of good quality enough to become a player of the Dutch national team.
“You cannot promise someone a starting place, but you can indicate who the competitors are. Dest must make a trade-off based on our story: Am I now going to bind myself to America or will I choose the Dutch national team? “
Hoogma also confirmed the talks with PSV Eindhoven talent Mohamed Ihattaren, who could choose Morocco.
He said, “The route with Ihattaren has been running a little longer. He is now with the Dutch Juniors and we have already had coffee here with him. He is of course emphatically in the picture. We are in close contact with PSV. Ronald with Mark van Bommel, myself with John de Jong and Toon Gerbrands. The same applies to Ajax and Dest. In those conversations we consult: How are we going to ensure that he chooses us? Clubs also prefer that players stay close and not have to travel long every international period. If they are at the KNVB, then they can also switch quickly if something is wrong.

A pure example of how speed can totally disseminate some of the best backline. Tottenham had no clue what hit them and boy Gnabry has shifted another gear. If you think about Vertonghen and Alderweireld who are household names in the backline, simply were made to look like amateurs.

Ajax match wasn’t as one-sided as the scoreline made it seem. Valencia had a penalty and hit the woodwork twice. Ajax hit the woodwork twice as well to be fair.
Very exciting match, lots of play on the counter from both teams. Onana came up with some big saves to keep Ajax in it.
Ziyech was a class above the rest. Could be one of the standouts of this Champions League class.

Dest play like what he did against lile. A medium game. Van de beek was superb with lots of energy. Ziyach was good also tadic was teasing valencia defender many times and his pas in 3rd goal was awesome. Ajax was beatable on counter. No Dest has big role in flui play,incredibly skille don ball ,hence doesnt loose balls like Dumfries, as with Dest momentum and move still alive,it helps Zyech a lot at right wing..As you if your partner in crime loose the ball it will affect you as well..Dest doest break the rythem with zyech on right wing…That has huge impact on game..
attacking wise, yes, Dest was having a good (not great) game. OTOH, he frequently lost his man when defending. the penalty, for instance, had he not lost his man, Alvarez wouldn’t have to commit the tackle (that was also unnecessary tackle imo)
he’s still young and can improve though.
Ajax-valencia was an open match..Ajax was Joy to watch…Cillessen easily conceded the Zyech first goal..HE ALWAYS DOES IT WHEN YOUR TEAM PLAYS WELL YOU CONCEDE A SILLY GOAL OR HE MAKES A SILLY MISTAKE.HENCE THE MORAL goes down.Cillessen made zyech goal more beautiful.That changed the whole game or else it would have ended up in draw at a point..like 2-2…

in conclusion, this is still the same Ajax: beautiful possession game, making lots of chances, but also making (maybe not a lot) unnecessary mistakes. an opponent on top form (although with less quality), like Tottenham last season, will surely punishes this team mercilessly.
also I’m not convinced with Alvarez-Martinez pairing. we need Gravenberch and Eiting.

I would not be that dramatic with the conclusion that if AZ does not win MU, then Myron and Calvin are worthless. Keep in mind the psychological pressure. Those kids have not played any serious opponents yet. Even though MU is not at their full strength, they are still MU and the name per se will be a strong burden to carry for those boys. I am not 100% convinced in AZ mental strength. We will see how things will go. But it is a great experience for entire AZ.

Re: AZ. Very impressed with AZ’s organization, much of that due to Vlaar and Koopmeiners. Wijndal was impressive. Stengs’ skills and physical gifts are apparent, and he is fun to watch. But against what was essentially a 2nd unit from Man U., he had trouble finding space and making a difference. I think that is just a matter of experience and playing more games against better opponents. No question he can get to a high level, just not there yet.
3 of the 4 Dutch top clubs won their games yesterday and Alkmaar should have won it also

I watched yesterday replay of AZ-MU and one thing I have to tell you AZ under Arne Slot getting better and better. It is not by chance, I always mention his name to keep in mind as he is a young coach with a great potential. Did you notice how great technically team had played against MU? The passing accuracy was fantastic. The positional play was great too. Although it was a MU B team it will boost AZ confidence. I have not seen such an organized AZ for many many years. LOVE it!
With respect to our boys, I think all four under 21 team members (Boadu, Stengs, Koopmeiners and Wijndal) are progressing really well. They are not ready for Oranje yet but they still have year or so to prove it. If nothing serious happens to them, all quartet can be ready for 2022 Qatar.

Karsdorp is another player who with every game is trying get sharper and sharper, trying to get back from where he left.the competition between him and dumfries will be intresting and if Dest comes into picture,if, it will even get more interesting. Basically this is what you wanna see in most department.some intense competition, more talents,more stlyes, more depth

It’s tough. Koopmeiners is my personal preference for a midfielder. I like how everything runs through him, but I know with Wijnaldum, van de Beek and de Jong in the line-up he won’t get opportunities.
It will be very tough to get a midfield 4 in there, unless de Jong starts to play closer to the back line, something like:

Yeah you correct I think its was last season when Ajax was on the road to reaching the CL semis.As mentioned others teams have been in bad form and at the same time dutch teams seem to be doing good this season. Also remember it’s already confirmed the winner of eredivisie will qualify directly to group stage of CL next season.Ajax,PSV,AZ all look to build up on this season and if they continue this going through the next season. NT can rake in more coefficient points to get two teams qualify directly.
We have to get up to 6th to get 2 direct spots, which may take a few years as the 2017/18 points are so low to that it will always hold us back.

This kid is playing football at the highest level, and minimally. He’s maybe had 25 minutes of Premier League time, of course he’s not scoring.
He’s finally breaking in Ole’s team, lets maybe let him have a full game before we decide that he’s not good enough.
Also I’d love to see any of the other Oranje talents shift to the Premier League and see how they hold up. It’s so frustrating seeing everyone here throwing Noa Lang who plays in the 2nd Division of Dutch Football ahead of Chong.

Chong is in the same boat as depay.he is simply up against more technical players in his department. He has till jan to prove the critics wrong and make some big impression because united are sure to spend big in jan which will further push him in pecking order.

Malen score two goals. As i see the superstar of the game was bergwin he did everything he want and score a goal and assist 2 other goal. Also gapko played 30 minutes and make an assist for malen. Psv defence r two slow. But they r still best team to watch.
Alkmar has a poor game. I caanot undrestand what happened to them. Also buadu get red catd in final minute and will miss next game.

Watched PSV game on ESPN+ in the states. Great platform to watch games.
PSV looked tired first half and VVV was well organized. Second half they clicked.
The difference was Gakpo coming on. He changes the game with his neat passing and excellent ball control. Berwijn had a great game, his goal was very well taken. Dumfries did well, was productive going forward and scored a goal.
Malen of course is a clinical finisher now, doesn’t miss. Reminds me of a young Depay, but more grounded and less selfish

Willem II – AZ Alkmaar 1:1
Lately WIllem has been notoriously difficult opponent for AZ. Last year we lost both Eredivisie games and were kicked of by Willem in the semifinals of KNVB cup.
Today game was not an exception. Four yellow and one red cards (Boadu) concludes how difficult was this game for AZ again. AZ missed several good chances but overall, team had difficulties to adjust after the equalizer. Stengs and particularly Boadu lacked precision. Dany de Wit has been the worst player on the pitch. He tried hard and as a result got injured and left the field. Calvin was very slow and his passes were terrible today. Myron’s emotions were overboard and as a result due to two yellow cards he will miss next Eredivisie game. One credit to Myron is that he earned the penalty that Koopmeiners finsihed today.
Two Dutch players that I would highly rank today were Bizot and Koopmeiners. Bizot made several great saves and due to his psychological games with the Willem’s penalty taker forced the latter to made a mistake.
Teun as usually had a great game. He finished perfectly his 5th penalty of this season. He has fantastically grown into the role of captain in the field. He was so strong defensively today and great in controlling the midfield.
With respect, to Stengs and Myron. I believe, they need to improve their physical strength. Two games per week are taking too much strength from them. In contrast, majority of Oranje internationals of their age looked today much fresher and stronger. I believe it is something that Arne Slot needs to work on. AZ fate very much depends now on how fit are the attacking trio Idrissi-Boadu-Stengs. IF they are in shape, everything goes great, if they are not AZ have hard time to break the defense.
Overall, I see the progress compared to last season: we got a point against Willem versus last year zero 🙂

Another solid performance by ake vs Arsenal and again, is he really should be sitting on the bench for NT. Its just depressing to see koeman not using him to reshuffle the backline and create more competition between van dijk and de ligt. Out of all the position its the CBs who should be familiar with each other. I dont know what koeman is doing but if van dijk has to get injured, I dont know what he expects from the incoming defender to do especially when he hasnt played much together.

As to what Koeman would expect from Ake if Van Dijk were injured, I think you answered your own question: based on Ake’s consistently good play in the EPL, I would think that Koeman would expect a good performance from him.
Let me turn the question around: Are you advocating that Koeman should play Ake ahead of Van Dijk against NI—a team currently ahead of the NT in the standings—so that he and De ligt can get experience playing together?
Lesser games or lesser opponents Ake can be given chances…i would say AKE should start as DM..koeman should give chances to Dest,Winjdal,Wiliams and karsdorp..

expectations can also turn out to be deceptive.In Akes case what im saying is, he has reached the level where he should in line for the starting spot and what better way it would be, starting him along side van dijk. de ligt vs Bulgaria, van dijk vs wales. they all needed to calm their nervous before they hit the accelerator. Ake also needs the same baptism and it will only build his confidence level, better chemistry and incite healthy competition. this is what a smart coach would do.i mean that’s what you wanna see, players fighting for the spot, staying focused and intend its increases the depth factor.
you look at what happening in the forwards department and how competition is starting to build up. this will certainly isolate the better from the best. (water from the milk)

No, it does not make sense. Short term we don’t need Luuk, he never play. Long term, he is going to the bench at this rate so at Euro, we will have some players who are seriously out of form.
It is so weird that Luuk De Jong and Strootman keep their place in their squad where they struggle at their club.
Weghorst not only score goal but is excellent in linking up play also and pressure the defender. He is not world class yet but he is pretty close.

Don’t agree on swapping De ligt for Ake in an important game like Thursday’s. But I see what you are saying. Agree on the forwards…there are alot of players on the edge; some will step forward, others won’t. Competition can only help.
And I readily admit that I fall into the non-genius category, but I’m going to assume that Koeman has thought about contingencies. Not sure why you think he has not.
I was not exactly meaning swapping him in the next qualifiers but overall a player of his level now in epl should be starting.thats what I meant.

Gravenberch,Eiting,Lang,Ihattaren,Reis. Just have to wait for this guys to hit the ground rolling. The midfield currently lacks creativiness and these guy could well bloster that department with options. Forwards and backline are sorted.
