Well, here we go again. Just as things were starting to look settled up front, the Dutch national team suddenly finds itself without both Memphis Depay and Brian Brobbey. Two strikers out, just as crucial fixtures are coming up. It’s a big headache for Ronald Koeman — but maybe also a golden chance for someone new to step up and write their name into Oranje history. It’s time to plan for a post-Memphis time and it may be also time to put Brobbey on ice for a bit, until he starts playing again. Anywhere, really.
So who’s it going to be? Let’s run through the options.
The Safe Bet: Wout Weghorst
Say what you will about him — Wout Weghorst keeps proving people wrong. He’s not the silkiest, he’s not the fastest, but he knows how to score when it matters. He’s got experience, he’s a warrior, and he’ll fight for every ball. The downside? We all know the Oranje attack can get a bit one-dimensional with him up top. But in a crunch, Weghorst is never afraid to take responsibility. However, who will be the pinch hitting super sub if we start him?
The New Blood: Emanuel Emegha
Emanuel Emegha at Strasbourg is one of those players you look at and think: this guy could really explode if given the chance. Tall, quick, technical — he has the raw ingredients. Sure, he hasn’t worn the Big Oranje shirt yet, but sometimes you need to throw a fresh name into the fire. He’s a known entity in Zeist, of course and orange does suit him. Remember how Memphis got his break? This could be Emegha’s moment to surprise everyone. Although the former Sparta striker recently declared in the media he has put Oranje out of his head (for now?) it might well be time for Koeman to bring some more new blood in.
The Hungry Finishers: Joel Piroe & Thijs Dallinga
Joel Piroe was banging them in for Leeds in the Championship and is currently showing his worth in the EPL. Yes, it was “only” the Championship, but goals are goals, and Piroe has always had that killer instinct. The Championship is usually considered inferior by people who don’t know the competition that well, but players who experienced it will tell you it’s a tougher league than the Eredivisie. So if Brobbey is good enough for Oranje, why not Piroe? If we need someone to just be in the right place at the right time, he’s your man.
Then there’s Thijs Dallinga, who’s been thriving in Serie A with Bologna after impressing in France. He’s quick, clever, and has the work rate to match. He doesn’t play like a typical Dutch No. 9 — but maybe that’s exactly why he could fit. The former Excelsior fox in the box has had his Oranje debut already, so they have his suit size in Zeist.
The Bold Move: A False Nine with Xavi Simons
Here’s where it gets really interesting. Instead of going with a “like for like” striker, Koeman could shake things up with a false nine system. Imagine Xavi Simons starting centrally, dropping deep, pulling defenders out of position, and creating chaos. That would open up space for Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen to make those dangerous diagonal runs behind.
It’s risky — no doubt — but it could also make Oranje more unpredictable and flexible for the future. We’ve been too predictable at times; maybe this is the shake-up the attack needs.
Mexx Meerdink: A new Hero?
With Memphis Depay out, Dutch fans are dreaming of something new, something fresh. And the name on many lips is Mexx Meerdink. The AZ striker isn’t a household name yet, but he’s got that raw energy, that fearless striker’s instinct, that makes supporters believe he could be the surprise package Oranje needs.
Meerdink plays without fear. He’s hungry, always on the move, sniffing for chances, and the way he throws himself into every attack feels like a breath of fresh air. He might not have the experience yet, but sometimes passion and bravery can light up a team more than anything else. In his young career, he already scored some scorchers and according to some pundits, the goal of the season is already his.
And hasn’t this happened before? Patrick Kluivert was just 18 when he came off the bench at Euro ’96 and buried a winner against England. Marco van Basten wasn’t the obvious choice in ’88, but he exploded onto the scene and fired Oranje to glory. Dutch football has a history of unexpected heroes stepping up when the nation needed it most.
Imagine it now: a young Mexx Meerdink, unknown to most of Europe, suddenly pulling on the Oranje shirt and writing his name into our football folklore. Fans are ready to dream—why not give Mexx the chance to make it real?
The Wildcards
Joshua Zirkzee (Man United): Skill, flair, creativity — more like a No. 10 than a pure striker, but he could turn a game on its head. The former Feyenoord talent hasn’t had much minutes under Amorim though, so he might be very rusty indeed.
Myron Boadu (AS Monaco on loan at Bochum): Remember him? Still only 23, and if he rediscovers his old AZ form, he’s another wildcard to keep in mind. He had a decent season at Bochum with 9 goals out of 19 games, and is on the hitlist to join Valencia or Genoa.
Donyell Malen (Aston Villa): Maybe not a central striker by trade, but he’s got the speed and finishing to play there in a pinch. He played there before in Oranje and done well in the jersey, but like many, he hasn’t featured much as yet so might not be fighting fit.
What Should Koeman Do?
If you want safety, you go Weghorst. If you want potential, you gamble on Emegha or Dallinga. If you want to experiment for the future, you try Simons as a false nine. Honestly, this might be one of the most fascinating striker dilemmas Oranje has had in years.
One thing’s for sure: someone new is going to get their chance. And whoever takes it could suddenly find themselves as a key piece of Oranje’s Euro 2028 plans.
⚽️ Who would you start? Stick with Weghorst’s grit, throw in a wildcard like Emegha, or go full bold with Simons as a false nine? I’m all for using Emegha, if you’d ask me. Which you didn’t. But still.

Btw I noticed there was a lot of criticism on Frenkie here, so I posted an article on his way…
I like to be the contrarian here. A striker needs to score goals. That is his job. Van Basten, Van…
The competition was tough btw hasselbaink, kluivert era and then Van persie and huntelaar. Saying hasselbaink only socered 9 goals…
there is no comparison between Depay Vs Van basten/Kluivert,Van persie/Nestelrooy...in oranje or clubs..They were world class elite class footballers...There are…
Its all about scoring goals, yes van Basten & van Nistelrooy had something extra, maybe Kluivert en van Persie. Hasselbaink…
I would try out the false 9 formation with Justin Kluivert, Noa Lang, Sem Steijn and Xavi Simons.
For a real 9, try Mexx Merdink. Emegha.
Others mentioned I don’t think will cut it.
Also, can rope in Kees Smit to check him out among the big boys.
If a 16yo Rio Numogha can cut it in EPL, so can Kees Smit!
koeman is tactically poor coach, but with wim Jonk he might change.who knows..Wim Jonk is a sensational infield trainer…so i dont know how he uses xavi simons as false striker with kluivert….that would be dager in opponent half..in this VAR era ,we will draw many penalty from that..thats an inovative idea..it requires balls to test at least will koeman??..
As a striker ,i will take meerdink, this guys smells gaols..can finish from anywhere.hungary, clever like a world class footballer…with Weghorst experienced i would go with Meerdink blindly..
Would like to see Meerdink, but if PSV will be able to contract Zirkzee as a Replacement for their second striker Plea it could be Zirkzee as well. Can Koeman resist the call for fresh blood?
Hey guys, I like ycsng’s idea of a false 9. But I’d be surprised if Koeman tried that out. He’ll see the match against Poland as a chance to essentially lock up the group, and won’t want to overthink it. It’ll be Weghorst as a traditional 9. With Frimpong injured, it’ll likely be Simons on the right, though I could see him going with Mallen or Kluivert on the right.
I’m curious about others think about the midfield. They were so dangerous against Spain with Reijnders coming from a deeper mf positions and Kluivert at the 10. Otoh, they gave 5 goals in two games with that group. Gravenberch, De Jong and Reijnders (at the 10) is better defensively. So which is the better combination?
A nice article, which is one that does give leave optimism.
A slight correction to the article is needed. Kluivert did not score the winner in 1996 against England. He came off the bench to score an important goal in the 4-1 loss. That goal ensured we pipped Scotland to 2nd place in the group and the Quarter Finals. In the end it was all academic as we loss to France in the QF on penalties after a drab 0-0 affair.
Perhaps it was Champions league winning goal for Ajax in 1995 you’re thinking of? Also from the bench.
Sorry to poor cold water on this article. If we had a more adventurous and dynamic coach, I would be very excited to see who they would select or what tactical change they would make. In fact, we have known for a long time now that we have a striker problem, even when Depay as fit.
And yet under Koeman, no real experimentation has taken place in that department. Under a more adventurous and dynamic coach, I think we’d be well into our period of experimentation.
Koeman only reacts when we have injuries or if a player transfers to what he perceives to be an acceptable club in status before they can represent the national side. You only have to look at when players got there chances. Frimpong, played in an undefeated Bayern Leverkusen team yet struggled to make the Dutch squad despite our attacking deficiencies down the right hand side. Schouten, only really made the team because Frenkie was out of the Euros. Reijnders had to move to AC Milan before he had any credit in Koeman’s bank. I could go on.
Therefore, my optimism at this moment of real opportunity is somewhat dampened by our coach.
A player missed of this list (I know he’s not a striker), is Kees Smit. He has all types of goals in him and could be a force in attacking midfield.
Problem number 1 is Koeman will do nothing, absolutely nothing. So he will use Weghorst and Depay. If those get injured, next on his list is Brobbey and he even try to convince Luuk De Jong to not retire. Sometime i wonder if he even watch enough matches? Does he follow up teams in Ligue 1 or Bundesliga? Why does Steijn get called now and not before? Is it because he playing at Feyenoord now and Koeman only watch Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord? If it is up to me, i will call Emegha and experiment with Steijn as the striker.
Problem number 2 is the Dutch striker development. Something shift in the youth system after the generation of RVN, Kluivert, Bergkamp, .. The striker does not know how to stay calm and shoot under pressure: Zirkzee, Janssen, Brobbey, Bergwijn, Malen…. The mentality is also weak, you see strikers go through hot and cold phases all the time: Brobbey, Malen, Zirkzee, Depay … This type of striker will never succeed at big club.
Only a country like the Netherlands that wouldn’t sacked R Koeman. He is one of worst coach in modern football. In almost 4 years no significant changes have taken place in this team. No new players. Many players are 32 plus years of age. So many of them are bench warmers in their clubs. Same team selection for more than 2 years. His substitutions often time makes no sense what so ever. The funny thing is that no one in the Netherlands is asking for his firing. Unbelievable
I have ferociously debated with Jean in the past, for good reasons – I still think. But this time I can’t disagree. Koeman is a disappointment. I am asking for his sacking.
So funny as the Dutch media is criticizing everyone except Koeman. Total nonsense! No one in Dutch media is asking for Koeman’s head but they are complaining about 1 poor performance of Reijnders. BD
Silly if they are complaining about Reijnders…he was the only mf who tried to push forward, and apart from Gakpo, who was he supposed to link up with and play off of? Neither Depay or Simons was effective.
De Jong is injured and out for Lithuania. I hope this means that Reijnders drops back to play next to Gravenberch and Kluivert comes in to play the 10; more movement and forward thrust.
Any chance they try Stein at striker?
They are still in the driver’s seat for qualifying. Assuming they beat everyone else, even if they were to lose to Poland in Warsaw (which I don’t think will happen), the best Poland can do is tie them in points, and the NT is far ahead in goal difference.
Our Problem is Deep, its not Players..It starts with Nijel De jong the TD..He also needs to be fired ..Forget about any hope on WC2026..Koeman doesnt even watches his players at theor clubs..Reiziger is another clown nijel has hired….We need to promote that u19 coach as senior team coach..if not call back Lui van gaal..Ten haag is pathetically dogmatic like Koeman..
I am fan of orange for last 30 years,Our situations are pathetic.i will not be watching NT under koeman any more..My blood boils when i see this idiotic, lunatic, money grabbing, glory hunter, tactically clueless coach is the leader of my team..

Ooh well spotted, that was a terrible error indeed (on Kluivert). Thanks for your response, good insights!!
I look at this as two problems:

Per VI, the lineup is Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Hecke, Van Dijk, Van de Ven; Gravenberch, De Jong, Reijnders; Simons, Depay, Gakpo.
No surprises.
