Maurice Steijn is the new coach of Ajax for next season

After the Ajax board confirmed that John Heitinga would not remain in charge of the team for the next season, Sven Mislintat was looking for a new name to coach the Amsterdam team. The Godenzonen announced the signing of Maurice Steijn, coach who was working at Sparta Rotterdam this last season.

Maurice Steijn signs for three seasons with Ajax. At the age of 49, he arrives under strong suspicion from everyone he has never coached a club on the level of Ajax.

In 2011, Maurice Steijn started his career as a professional football coach in the Netherlands. It was at ADO Den Haag where he received his first opportunity. In the Netherlands, he has worked at clubs such as VVV-Venlo, NAC Breda and most recently at Sparta Rotterdam.

Under his command, Gladiadores Alvirrubros managed to compete in the Europese Tickets Eredivisie and fight for a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League 2023/24. Kasteelheren reached the final but lost to FC Twente. It is noteworthy that last season, Maurice Steijn and Sparta Rotterdam managed to add the highest score in the last 38 years of the Rotterdam club.

“We are grateful to Maurice Steijn for what he has meant to Sparta Rotterdam. He gave the club a new face when everything was very confusing and worked hard to keep our team in the Eredivisie. We are proud of what we achieved last season. The fact that Ajax, one of the biggest clubs in the Netherlands, look to Maurice Steijn, is seen with extraordinary joy by us, because it shows us how much we were observed. We would have liked to stay with Maurice Steijn for longer, we had good talks about it and he made it clear that he wanted to stay with us, but he also made it clear that if any bigger club in the Netherlands wanted to rely on his services, he wanted to take advantage of this opportunity ” said Gerard Nijkamp, director of football at Sparta Rotterdam.

“When I talk about Sparta Rotterdam, I can remember an excellent period we had together. For the past 14 months I have loved working at Het Kasteel and I wish all the luck and success in the world to the club’s players, directors and fans,” said Maurice Steijn.

“Maurice Steijn has been a professional football coach for about twenty years, of which in the last ten years he has played in the first team. At every club he worked for, Maurice Steijn managed to exceed all expectations. He is ready to take on the challenge of coaching Ajax. In addition, we are studying each name that will make up the coaching staff and that will help you on this journey “, said Sven Mislintat, director of Ajax.

Youri Regeer leaves FC Twente for Ajax

FC Twente have announced the signing of Youri Regeer from AFC Ajax. At just 19 years old, Youri Regeer had a contract with the Godenzonen until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The Tukkers paid Ajax €900,000 to have Youri Regeer. At FC Twente, the expectation is that he will be able to reinforce the defensive system. Youri Regeer has signed with Enschedese until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Youri Regeer has been playing in the AFC Ajax youth team since 2017. He was active in the youth divisions of ADO Den Haag. On 15 December 2021, he made his debut for the Ajax first team in a Dutch Cup match. For the main team of Amsterdam, he played eight matches and scored only one goal.

At Jong Ajax, Youri Regeer held more prestige. There were 91 games with six goals scored and eighteen assists.

“I am very happy and proud for this great step in my career. I hope to grow even more within this wonderful club. I can’t wait to start the new season and make a lot of progress on a personal level and together with the team. See you soon at De Grolsch Veste” said Youri Regeer.

“We are happy that we were able to bring Youri Regeer to FC Twente for a long time. Youri Regeer is a great talent and a very complete and multifunctional player. Youri Regeer has been playing at a good level for several years and is ready to take a new step” said Jan Streuer.

Danny Buijs is the new coach of Fortuna Sittard

After announcing that Julio Velázquez would no longer be Fortuna Sittard’s coach for the next season, the club’s board ran out of time to announce a new commander and the name of Danny Buijs was made official. After an adventure in Belgium, more precisely at KV Mechelen, Danny Buijs is back in the Eredivisie to manage Fortunezen.

Danny Buijs’ contract with Fortuna Sittard is valid for the next two seasons. The coach will have time to assemble the team in his own way. In Belgium, Danny Buijs managed KV Mechelen in just eleven matches, with three wins, two draws and six defeats. He was fired for low performance.

In the Netherlands, he managed only FC Groningen in the Eredivisie. In 136 games, he won 50 against 60 losses and 26 draws. Without achieving good results with the Green-and-White Army, he ended up being fired in his last season at the club.

Even with little experience in the Eredivisie and with not so good jobs, Fortuna Sittard decided to bet on Danny Buijs to try to keep the club in the elite of national football in the next two seasons.

PSV advances in negotiations with Peter Bosz to be its new coach

PSV Eindhoven is already running out of time to announce its new coach for next season. Peter Bosz’s name begins to gain even more strength internally and the deal with the 59-year-old coach should be finalized in the coming days.

It had been clear for some time that Peter Bosz was the main candidate on the Boeren board to succeed Ruud van Nistelrooij. Negotiations gained a greater speed this Thursday, after long talks over the course of this week. The main topics discussed between the PSV board and Peter Bosz were the formation of the coaching staff and squad, in addition to his personal contract.

Should Peter Bosz become PSV’s new coach, he will return to Dutch football after six years. In 2017, he left Ajax after one season to work for Borussia Dortmund. After that he also defended Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Olympique Lyonnais.

Since Peter Bosz was sacked by Olympique Lyonnais in October last year, his name has been linked heavily with AFC Ajax. Especially after the resignation of Alfred Schreuder earlier this year. He was seen as the ideal name to help Ajax rebuild, but by dismissing Alfred Schreuder, the Amsterdam club’s board preferred to end the season with John Heitinga and with that lost the Dutch Cup title and a place in the next UEFA Champions League.

Benfica offers 30 million euros for Orkun Kökçü

The Turkish midfielder and captain would be very close to being announced as a reinforcement for Roger Schmidt’s Benfica for next season.

Benfica’s initial proposal to take Orkun Kökçü out of the Netherlands is around 30 million euros, including variables that can be achieved. Furthermore, Orkun Kökçü’s salary would be tripled in Portugal.

Stadionclub does not want to release Orkun Kökçü for less than 40 million euros. The midfielder is only 22 years old and could still bring a lot of money to Benfica’s coffers, if this negotiation is confirmed.

If Benfica manage to buy Orkun Kökçü for less than €40m, current Feyenoord director of football Dennis te Kloese is expected to add a high resale percentage. The expectation is that in the next few days, this negotiation will be finalized.

Memphis’ injury a blessing?

This is not a sentence I expected to write. Ever. Memphis has been super important for the Dutch NT, ever since his appearance at the World Cup in 2014. Under coach Koeman, the explosive and talented forward led the team, scored a record number of goals and is well on his way to become Oranje’s all time goalscorer and most likely most capped player. Or so it seemed.

But, the former Sparta youngster hasn’t been able to shine for more than a year now. His Euros was lacklustre and his World Cup a big question mark. He went from injury to injury and was absent more than present, both at Barcelona and more recently at Atletico.

But, as we established here, as the Dutch have trouble to thank their heroes and force them out to make way for new stars, it was a real question whether coach Koeman would make wholesale changes or whether he would rely on the old guard. Virgil, Cillesen, Memphis, Daley Blind, Wijnaldum…

Like many coaches before ( Zwartkruis in 1980, Beenhakker in 1990, Van Marwijk in 2012, Van Gaal recently), it seemed Koeman was falling back on the old hands, but reality has reared up it’s not so ugly head and helped the former snow flake a bit.

Cillesen had a couple of howlers at the end of the season and couldn’t dig a hole big enough to hide in.

Daley Blind hardly played and has already been told he’s out of the squad.

Wijnaldum is stil with the squad but with his recent lacklustre performances and with Koopmeiners’ classy run as a #10, I don’t think Gini will feature much.

Virgil was able to claw back to a decent form, after a season of mishits and stumbles and will most likely lead the team out versus Croatia.

And Memphis? Well, he pulled out himself. Not fit enough to play and prefers – smartly – to prep for the new season in Madrid.

And it’s a blessing.

Arie Haan in 1974

And don’t forget: we know how coach sometime end up with their success formulas just by sheer luck, coincidence or as the result of setbacks. Michels lost all his centre backs in 1974 (Israel, Laseroms, Drost, Mansveld, Hulshof) and decided to put midfielder Arie Haan in the back with young stopper Wim Rijsbergen.

Or in 1988, when the same Michels started the Euros with 4-3-3, with Marco van Basten on the bench. A player who almost didn’t make the cut. After one match – losing versus USSR – Michels went to a 4-4-2 with Van Basten and Gullit up front. The rest is history.

Van Gaal and his three at the back in 2014? This came about due to an injury for defensive mid Kevin Strootman and an experiment of Koeman with Feyenoord away at PSV.

The Memphis injury could well be a key break for Koeman. Or, as Cruyff would say it, this could be an advantage resulting from a disadvantage.

Koeman and Van Gaal both were tempted to to use two wingbacks and three defenders, to build a solid foundation and create space for his mercurial forward. Memphis needed freedom.

Johnny Bosman versus USSR in 1988

But the 3 at the back system didn’t work for Koeman as he saw that his team had issues dominating the game. At the same time, Ten Hag showed how you can do it, with a 4-2-3-1 system. When Frenkie de Jong came into view, Koeman switched to the Ajax system, with two central defenders, at times augmented by the deep lying De Jong, who’d drop in between, pushing the full backs further up the field.

Frenkie made his entrance in Sneijder’s farewell match versus Peru and the new Oranje system was settled. In 2018, Koeman built his team around Virgil, Wijnaldum and Memphis. The latter two do not have the status or form they had back then and it’s time for a change.

The only two Dutch forwards who perform at a high level in big competitions are Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen. Therefore, it seems only logical to build the team around a new #9: Gakpo.

At Liverpool, he plays like a false 9, with two offensive midfielders in his back. Fabinho, the defensive lock, will be paired with Trent Alexander-Arnold who joins the midfield from the back, a role Geertruida plays at Feyenoord. At Liverpool, Andy Robertson is the third centre back, which is the role Ake plays at Man City. Both Van Dijk and De Ligt are accustomed to this system.

It seems Oranje could well play in this same form, although Dumfries might be at odds in this role. It’s not very likely that Koeman will drop the Inter right back though, but this Liverpool/Man City system could well work for Holland.

For me, I don’t think we can go beyond Ake as left back. He can fill the job the way Blind did, as Ake too is a great passer of the ball.

This leaves space for Frenkie to explore the left side a bit and in my midfield, I would have Mats Wieffer playing the defensive mid, with Frenkie next to him but with freedom to roam on that left flank.

My number 10 in this system is Teun Koopmeiners. I don’t like him much as a six, but in the #10 role he is killing it at Atalanta. I’d pick Xavi Simons as the left winger and Malen on the right, of course.

Noppert should not start, in my view, and if it’s a toss up between Flekken and Bijlow, I’d go for the latter.

As for the RCB, I would pick De Ligt versus a static #9 and Timber versus the more diminutive forwards (like David Silva or Alexander Isak). Not sure what Croatia will bring.

This is my line up.

John Heitinga will not be Ajax coach next season

After five months in charge of the Ajax first team, John Heitinga is no longer the manager of the Amsterdam club. The club issued a statement in which it was announced that John Heitinga will not remain in charge of the professional team for the next season and that a new coach will be hired to lead the team.

There were twenty-two games leading AFC Ajax, with fourteen wins, three draws and five defeats. Under him, the Godenzonen scored forty-nine goals and conceded twenty-six goals.

John Heitinga was coaching Ajax’s B team and was given the opportunity to manage Ajacieden’s first team following the sacking of Alfred Schreuder in January. The expectation is that he managed to organize the team on the pitch and at least lead Ajax to compete in the UEFA Champions League next season.

He failed to help the Amsterdammers secure a place in the UEFA Champions League and lost the Dutch Cup final to PSV. In the last round of the Eredivisie, Ajax lost 3-1 to FC Twente in Enschede.

Branco van den Boomen is Ajax’s first signing for next season

AFC Ajax have announced the signing of Branco van den Boomen for next season. The 27-year-old midfielder signs with the Godenzonen until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Branco van den Boomen had been sought after by other clubs in the Netherlands. PSV was close to reaching an agreement with the athlete who stood out in recent seasons with the shirt of Toulouse FC, but the Ajax board managed to be quicker and finalized his signing more quickly.

Aged 27, born in Veldhoven, a city located in the province of North Brabant, he began his career in the Ajax youth system. He arrived in 2011 and left the club in 2014. After leaving Ajax, with no room to move up to the professional team, he signed with FC Eindhoven and was immediately loaned to SC Heerenveen. The following season, he was loaned out again, this time to Willem II. In addition to these clubs, Branco van den Boomen played for De Graafschap in the Netherlands. In 2020, Toulouse FC paid around €350,000 to De Graafschap to hire the midfielder.

In just two clubs, Branco van den Boomen managed to play more than a hundred games. At De Graafschap he appeared in 119 games and scored 21 goals, while in France, with Toulouse FC, he played 121 games and scored 23 goals. Branco van den Boomen never managed to play for the first team of Ajax.

“We are delighted with the arrival of Branco van den Boomen. He is the first addition of many players that we will bring in to reinforce our team in order to reach our goals next season. We believe that with Branco van den Boomen, we will be able to start a transformation in our club’s squad” said Sven Mislintat, director of football at Ajax.

Branco van den Boomen had his contract terminated with Toulouse FC at the end of that season and as there was no agreement for renewal, the athlete was available to sign for any club free of charge. Ajax understood this opportunity and brought the midfielder to Amsterdam.
