You all know how I judge friendlies. The Norway one was ok, it was a good game, Norway played a good game too, considering and we were able to see some nice partnerships.
The Equador game was probably useful, due to the shock of the red card and the improvisations we needed to make, but a fun game to watch, it was not. I do like the fact that the guests decided to go in with their legs stretched and studs up, although Arne Slot won’t be happy with Frimpong getting injured.
I think we can make some harsh decisions on some of the players now and slowly but surely get to that 26 player squad.
It seems fair to say that we have some “certains” in our squad. Players that are beyond doubt, even though some might need to step up, still.
Goal keepers: Verbruggen, Roefs, Flekken (in that order).
I found Flekken wanting versus Equador. Too late out of his goal, resulting in the penalty. He had some more insecure moments. At this point, I can’t see Koeman replacing Flekken, but I do think Roefs will be #2.
Defenders: Dumfries, Frimpong, Virgil, Jurrien Timber, JP van Hecke, Mickey van de Ven, Nathan Ake.

Midfield: Frenkie, Gravenberch, Reijnders, Koopmeiners, Simons, Quinten Timber
Kees Smit and Luciano Valente will be options, but they both will need to show something in this last period of competition games. Based on their runs in Oranje, it’s hard to say, but Koeman will have seen and judged them in training as well.
Attack: Weghorst, Malen, Gakpo, Brobbey, Memphis
For al the players mentioned (you too, Depay!!): they will need to be 100% fit in order to be on the plane. I added Timber, Frenkie and Memphis as they won’t be question marks when fit, but this time around Koeman is not going to bring half fit players hoping to patch them up during the tournament.
So that makes 21 players, 5 more to pick.

5 more players to add?
I think Stefan de Vrij lost his spot. He hardly plays, he is getting on in age and he didn’t do too well versus Equador. It’s harsh, as he has had some top matches under Koeman but there has to be a time of letting him go and I think it’s now.
Geertruida is the obvious choice, as he is multifunctional and can play RB, CB and DM.
I believe a choice between Hato or Maatsen is also sensible. Both can play in multiple roles. My preference would be Maatsen.
In midfield, Joey Veerman will not make the cut. He is not the best midfielder, but Koeman also hinted at his personality traits which can get in the way. Too bad, because there is no better passer than him.
I would personally go for Valente. Schouten is a top player too, and can play RB if needed, but we don’t need that many defensive options. With the aforementioned midfielders, we cover the “neat passer” type. With Q Timber we do have a more adventurous dribbler, and I would add Valente who has the X factor in his passing. Most of our midfielders excel in passes up to 20 meters, Valente can give killer passes of 40 meters or more. He can dribble too and is not the type of guy to create havoc if he doesn’t play. Neither would Schouten by the way.
Up top, I would add Noa Lang as the creative supersub option and probably Summerville if he recovers soon and keeps on dazzling. Summerville has something special that most others lack (Noa Lang comes closest).

Emegha is still not fit, neither is De Ligt. Not sure if both will be able to ready in time. With Brobbey, Malen, Memphis and Weghorst, we do have our strikers, it feels. De Ligt in full fitness form would be a good addition, but I can’t see him ready in time.
There is rumour that Guus Til and Marten de Roon are considered as well. I think Til is too light for the WC level and Marten de Roon – even though he still impresses at Atalanta – will not offer enough football in comparison to the other midfielders.
It feels also that Justin Kluivert will not be ready in time. I don’t think I have seen him in more than 3 games this season. He will need to make a tremendous impact in the final 8 matches (same as Emegha, Meerdink, De Ligt and others).
Tell me your preferences!

From my point of view koemans decision to use Malen as striker was poor when he flopped in epl and then started piling up goals in less competitive serie A keeping in mind here what happened to the Italian national team. this is why these two friendliest was just a waste and neither it reflected the formbadiltty of the squad with injuries and again shud there be injuries going into or during World Cup. I mean let’s be honest here does the team looks improved from the euro in any way. Apart from Gravenberch 99% of the team is same and Koemans starting 11 probably will be the same as well. Gravenberch for Schouten and with no other injures. What do u expect to happen. Same players . Same tatic, same coach..yes he has injected new faces but no way they are competent enough or on par with the starting 11. Like Frenkie vs smit or valente vs Reijnders / Gravenberch. Do your expect them to make that impact of the bench if needed to be.
With Depay injured Koeman shud have looked at zirkzee instead of focusing on Malen who proved yet again he cannot be relied upon. It’s also pity how coaches have not been able to use zirkzee how motta used him at Bologna.
Maatsen omission is yet another egoistic selfishness from koeman showing how naive they are given ven der ven , Ake and hato are similar esque players. Defensive and versatile and Van with dijk playing all games Maatsen would have brought some thing different then the three and no doubt looking at his emery has used him at Villa it again shows why the Dutch coaches keep hitting the shovel in their own foot every time when it comes to player investment
Zirkzee – Brobbey
Reijnders
Maatsen- Amir-Gravenberch- dumfries/ Frimpong
Van der ven Van dijk- van heckie
Verbruggen
for the two friendlys
In term of fitness and goal scoring, our best bet at the moment are Malen, Brobbey and Zian Flemming. Malen is not performing because he was isolated. I am sorry but your proposed solution does not look better. You are saying that Malen only perform in weaker league like Series A and then you propose to use Zirkzee who only performed in Series A before? He does not get off the bench much at MU and he was never a goal scoring threat. In EPL, he scored less goals than Malen even after Malen left for months. How does that look better?
Exactly my thoughts. Wilson does this. Contradict himself. Malen did better than Zirkzee and he wanted to leave Villa, he didn’t fail. He just wanted playing time.
You need a mix of striking options. Malen = speed and directness. Brobbey = target man with back to goal. Weghorst = pinchhitter and warrior. I think we should add a striker to the mix, personally. Either Emegha, Flemming or Meerdink.
Zirkzee is not even a striker.
Exactly, that he is even mentioning Zirkzee, lol….
I would go with Emegha, already much more experience then Meerdink.
Who is amir??
Japan looks very strong right now, they beat England in the last friend. After getting Potter, Sweden is bringing out the potential of their stars. They looks very dangerous against Poland, who we failed to defeat twice in the qualifiers. And they will have Isaak coming back soon. The group looks tougher than what it will be. We really need to bring our A game to pass the group stage.
Yes I saw Japan take on England. They have a number of players in the Eredivisie. I see them regularly and they’re very good: aggressive, quick, direct and very hungry.
i predict Japan will win our group.
I predict Oranje first, the rest will be close…..
We will top the group and once Koeman plays a big popular team we get F@##ked by refree and dumfries,De vrij..
Japan’s game play is smooth and silky. They feel like an unit of cohesion and they can beat any team today. They don’t have big talent but their collective power is really strong. I fear that your prediction will come true.
Agree. The Japan match has scared me since the draw. They’ve recently beaten both Brazil and England. Fast, technically good, never stop running, and the players they bring off the bench don’t miss a beat. In both the qualifiers and the recent match against Norway, the Dutch have given their opponents way too many good scoring opportunities; usually on the counter, the kind that Japan could feast on.
I just read somewhere that with the inclusion of Sweden, the Dutch group is now ranked the third most difficult. That sounds right. Tunisia, rounding it out, is no “gimme.”

Zirkzee looked good. Has had descent minutes at msn United
He’s good player, but no striker. He’s a 10.
Zirksee is a mercurious no 10..not a goal scorer, more of goal creator by unsettlin any defense..
@Jan,
I don´t like Geertruida and Frimpong as defenders, looking back the 2 games against Spain, Frimpong defended very poorly, not the spirit of a winner, like Perisic, defending with all he has….. Geertruida just not good enough.
As a defender you can bring Schouten, who also does very well as a six.
As defenders we have enough options then, not sure if de Ligt will make it ?
I would bring also Guus Til as he really scores easily and Emegha and Summerville as 2 guys that maybe can do something at the end of the game, not as a starter, and also to prepare them for future tournaments.
Kees Smit? I am not convinced he is ready for this level, I would let him home, many more experienced options for him…
Frimpong was right winger Vs spain both games..Defense was not his duty,Just like Gakpo on left,..Geetruida and Frimpong combo was ecellent in those two games…
One mistake from Hato resulted gaol.and biased rfree gave red for Hato to spoil the party while saved Dean huijsen from nott gving red card at first leg…
Second leg spain was given soft penalty …i am curious to ask..Which match you were seeing to blame a winger for defense?/
How ever i do agree Frimpong is pretty poor as defender is he play as RB.just like Dumfries He is poor as defender..Koeman dont see him as defender ..is that clears you??
Geetruida is really capable right back, can play as inverted midfeilder from right back spot, that gives an extra body to mid feild…however i do agree Geetruida is questionable defender as CB….
I like guus till as striker,i like Dumfries as striker, their availability and energy are unparallel..i would use them over Weghorst and unfit memphis..
I agree with you on Kees Smit and Schouten as potential defender, in particular when the opponent plays with a low block.
Schouten is still so underrated.
There is big problem in the team thats, our soft midfeild i miss a strong destroyer like Nijle Dejong at DM..Mats weiffer is doing excellent at EPL with brighton,So does Kenny Tete..Koeman is biased and selection is based on experince..thats bad thing ..Givairo Read is better defender right back than Dumfries,Fripong,Geetruida..He is injured with hamstring and he plays like a 25 year old maturity..
timber should be our right back choice no 1…Second should be Jivairo read or Kenny Tete or Geetruida..thats how the quality based ranking for that spot..
De ligt is my favorite and i am sure he wont be ready fit for WC.Back injury is so serious,it will recuur at any time..Botman,Sepp van den berg should be getting the nod over De ligt and De vrij..De vrij should not be any where near the team, beacause he is not at all playing for inter..
Anybody has news on memphis fitness?/will he make it?/
Weghorst is horrendoous for ajax and i dont want to see him at WC,i will be thankfull to his gaols vs Arjetina..
Hato is slowly getting time at chelsea because that spainish guy cucurella is little baby girl..i am glad for Hato..
Ake should be there and he was impeccable at CB for city at carbao cup final…
For me its 26 man squad and they shoudl be playing regular or good amount minutes as sub in every game..
considering Deligt and memphis wont be fit.

Geetruida..
Wieffer is not a RB. He plays there due to Brighton’s dominance on the ball and his ability to move into midfield, like Geertruida, but Wieffer is not a defender.
Tete would be a good choice. Not sure why he is out of the picture. Could be a personality thing. I remember how he had Neymar in his pocket at some point. One v One he is a monster.
Read is not an option. Too young, too injured, too inexperienced.
Weghorst is the perfect pinchhitter, when you need someone to make war in the box. We have no other. We used to have Cees van Kooten, Wim Kieft, Pierre van Hooijdonk in this role.
I personally don’t think De Vrij will go to the WC.
Weiffer is mostly playing as RB,He is doing excellent job as inverted mid from right..that guy is good..i see him as Schoutn replacement..Not as RB i have my own boys for RB those are world no 1 Jurien timber,Givairo Read adn kenny Tete…
Frimpong is a right winegr for me..
Starting 11 for me

At the moment
Dumfries is really good when you dont have right back like Timber,Read,Tete and Geetruida…
Gakpo is really good left winger if you dont have Summerville, lang and simons..
De vrij is really good when you dont have De ligt, van hacke,Sepp van denberg and Botman.
The Italians are finally showing some courage by asking not only the people in the soccer federation and the coaching staff to get the F out. When are the Dutch going to do that? You have a team that hasn’t changed one bit for 4 years under R Koeman. Same people at least 90%. Same line up. Mediocre, most of them are unfit and bench warmers at their clubs.
We are in this WC simply because we were in the weakest group. There won’t be any miracle in this WC Jan.
I just hope after this WC, the Dutch people will say the same thing the Italians are saying now to the coaching staff. STAY IN THE UNITED STATES AND DON’T COME BACK
😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆
The issue is that we qualified and got far in the Euros. I’m not a fan of Koeman, far from it, but sadly despite him, we don’t do too badly.
We are champions telling ourselves “we could have and should have….”. After this WC, Koeman will be gone and I hope they’ll be able to get a more tactically endowed coach in, who wants to play the Dutch style or perish (like Bosz, Slot, Pastoor).
If we manage to get into the QF or SF, people in the Federation will deem this a good campaign.
De vrij is not playing at all,he should not be going to WC,De ligt has a serious back issue, which might even take his career..So sepp van den berg of Brentford and left footed Sevn botman should be called …there is no way Geetruida playoing as CB,nor does dumfries,Timber is another makshift CB but timber should be our no1 right back,i would even add kenny Tete.i have no trust as RB for dumfires and Frimpong..frimpong is excellent winger so he should get call, but dumfries is not a winger nor agood defender..he fits more 343 system..
Timber is definitely not a make shift CB. He played there for Ajax many many games.
Timber played as RB and Cb at ajax..mostly CB in last season ..He replaced Cb shuurs..i agree that..He hardly play AS CB at higheest football level..We have Well seasoned excellent CBs who play regular at EPL and CL ..so its idiotic to waste timber as CB..We have Van hecke,We have Botman (who could also play as RCB),De ligt(injured and out)..Sepp ven den Berg is excellent for for Brentford and Pastcal struijk is sensational for Leeds,..i will not waste time on Geetruida or Timber as CB..We need a solid right back ,and Timber is the world no1 right back both in attack and defense perspective..what a world clas RB we have..
Lot will be decided on referee and Fifa ,Mexcio, usa ,canada is going to get refree support ..so does england,Arjetina,Spain..thats what the world cup makes so ugly..ethics is gone..
While Ronald Koeman may still have doubts about a few players in his 26-man squad, his starting eleven is essentially set. Only injuries could still change that.
Against Norway and Ecuador, expected starters Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, and Jurriën Timber were absent. If they are fit, they will join Bart Verbruggen, Denzel Dumfries, Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders, Donyell Malen, and Cody Gakpo in the lineup that will kick off on June 14 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Dallas, against Japan.
thats pretty bad unbalanced line up..with an open hole midfeild.
Not a good midfield? Frenkie, Gravenbergh and Reijnders ?
What would you like to see then?
He wants to see Daley Blind, Dirk Kuyt and Adam Maher in midfield
infact that midfeild is not so bad..
i follow liverpool very close, due to dutch players and a dutch manager.slot really pisssed me off with his stubbornness..Gravenberch is not an ideal DM..He is a sensational player..there will be lack of vertical passes or forward passes ..that duo is so light weight for a WC cup tournament..Also Reinders as playmaker really SU@@ks…i agree they are best 3 mids we got,,but that doesnt mean they will click together…
For a Genius coach like guardiyola and personally for me Gravenberch is a deadly no 10 with goal scoring insticnt and capability,,He would rec hovac with any defense..
here we go guardiyola on Gravenberch
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/k0tnDX5aTVQ
I would like to see more of
Summerville———-Gakpo———Malen
——————–Gravenberch———————-
——-Quinten—————Frenkie——————-
Hato–Virgil———Van hecke——–Timber
—————–Verbruggen ——————————–
or Frenkei with schouten or Weiffer…
Reinders would be a excellent sub with lungs, legs and shooting capacity and a penalty shooter….
i cannot ignore gakpo, even with bias help from slot he plays regular and he is fit.however i do understand he is not better than summerville/Lang or simons..if van de ven can play left back,Gakpo can play striker instead of injured unfit Memphis ..thats how the logic is.
In Pep’s words, a #10 is the playmaker. It’s not necessarily the guy playing behind the striker. Ryan never played there. Not at Ajax, not in Oranje, never ever. He is amazing as a 6 or 8 but his style is playmaker. In today’s midfield, there is no longer a defending mid (Jansen), a box to box midfielder (Neeskens) and passing playmaker (Van Hanegem).
Every player needs to be able to pass, tackle, run, assist and score. Reijnders, Silva, Rodri, O’ Reilly, Cherki…. Wijnaldum, Henderson, Szoboszlai, Jones, Ryan, MacAllister, Rice, Odegaard, Frenkie, Pedri, the list goes on and on. Multi functional players, all of them.
If you follow Liverpool closely, explain how Slot is stubborn? He changes often, he is able to rotate, he responds to situations on the pitch, he usually changes players in an attacking manner, sometimes having 6 attackers on the pitch because he hates losing and he hates playing for the draw.
They should be grateful to have him. Who are you to claim Reijnders sucks?? A coach like Pep signed him and uses him.
You are such a weird football fan. You want to replace Schouten by Wieffer??? Why on Earth? What do you gain with that?
How does this win us the World Cup?
Gravenberch is a stop gap no6,still liverpool lacks that typical no6..gravenberch is top quality player like Timber they even play as goal keeper..that doesnt mean that they are world beaters as goalkeeper..No10/Play maker,i mean the guy who play behind the striker at final third..thats where we need a top quality like gravenberch.
Reinders still sucks as playmaker no10,We need some one like Palmer, simons, kluivert.Reinders is a bench player at city and he play as LCM in double pivot..thats okay i am okay that,i feel thats where reinders belongs too..Guardiyola agrees with me on that and he play Reindders as LCM in double pivot with rodri or some one else..or he will bench him..i mean a winner like guardiyola does it..i completely agree with guardiyol and idsagrees with you..
“””You are such a weird football fan. You want to replace Schouten by Wieffer””..what i mean was i prefer Frenkie with schouten or weiffer..We might be be defensively better with them than Gravenberch as frenkie partner..i see holes in mid thats pretty scary …
Gravenberch was LCM at ajax..why cannot we play him as playmaker no 10 instead of reinders?or kluivert?..
while writing these comments ,i am watching pool VS city..Pool gets out played by city..Gravenberch is getting out played by city mid feilders ..and Reinders sitting at bench..Once aagin Reinders sitting at bench and city leads 2-0 by half time…City has Cherkie,Foden, silva as play makers so reinders play them as LCM.thats where stregth of Tijjani is…not a surprise for me..Why Stupid koeman play him as N10 or playmaker role???
Jerdy Schouten has suffered a cruciate ligament injury, PSV has announced. The nightmare scenario has therefore come true for the Dutch international, who will miss out on the World Cup as a result.
That really sucks…He could have formed a solid defensive double pivot with Frenkie….Gravenberch is an elite player ,i would still take ,Frenkie with schouten/Weiffer/Quinten or reinders as double pivot..Not gravenberch..Gravenberch could destroy an opponet as playmket at final third behind striker,he is one of the most press resistant player in then world..We are lucky to have him..
Slot doesnt have a better option at Dm than him,he has writz and schobozlai as no 10…Gravenberch was used as effective DM..which makes logic..But that doesnt mean thats where stregth of gravenberch is …He is pure cretive, press resistant playmekr/No10..
Terrible news re: Schouten! It could not have happened to be nice guy. His post match interviews are great, honest and insightful. He is probably going to make a very good coach in the future, I rate him very high. Not spectacular in his playing but when he is not playing, he will be missed.
Sadly for us, and him, he’ll miss the WC and that is a sad thing indeed. Our thoughts are with him.
Liverpool is currently very vulnerable mentally. The first 35 minutes were good, versus City. They had more opportunities, with Salah alone in front of the goal at some point, but he dilly-dallied and got blocked.
The penalty was a fair one and the late conceded second goal broke something. The players stopped believing ( and fighting) which is something I have never seen before. Even man-machine Szoboszlai played poor in that phase.
Pep Lijnders will have decided to stop pushing after the 4-0 due to pity for his old club.
Slot needs a response versus PSG or it’s going to get worse even for him, the club and the legacy of Mo Salah.
The problem of Liverpool is that Salah is no longer a top player. But Liverpool is so used to Salah’s magical solution so now whenever Salah has a bad miss, their morale just drop.
Salah’s form has dropped significantly in the second half last season but Slot/Liverpool did not spot it. To be honest, it is hard to know as well, an older player has form drop in season half of the season could be temporary. Thus their transfer strategy is quite bad. They purchased Wirzt who operate in the same space with Szoboszlai, this is not necessary. Whereas their right wing backup is Chiesa who cannot get fit. On top of that, there are injuries of Isaak, Leoni, Frimpong, Bradley and Endo. And then Konate got his form dropped due to family event. This made their season become a mess.
I hope Slot figure out something but time is running out for him.
Congrats to PSV for their 27th title! They had another cracker jacker of a season. Stand out players: Perisic, Dest, Schouten, Saibari with Til and Dennis Man impressing as well. The main man is of course Peter Bosz!
Even if Feyenoord and Ajax had a normal season, PSV would have easily won this. The main thing for PSV (Bosz extended his deal) is: can they keep their strong holders (Perisic, Pepi, Dest, Saibari, Veerman) or will Bosz have to completely rebuild?
Peter Bosz already said last year how inportant it is to rebuild the squad, last year they sold Tillman and Noa Lang, this year Pepi and Veerman will go for sure. Dest will be depending as well on his World Cup as he plays for team US.
Perisic, not sure how eager he is to leave, Saibari will be the cashcow with more then 50M coming in for sure….
Lots of $$$ coming in to renew the team, 2 new defenders, new striker, maybe Tygo Land back, who knows….
Also important to keet Guus Til in Eindhoven, otherwise maybe loose to many players…..
The Technical Director showed the last years that he is doing a great job, always keeping players onboard and bringing new quality, lets see whayt Wanner, Dennis Man and other high potentials will do.
Congrats to PSV for the title. They dominated the league and won it easily.
I feel like they are the only Dutch club that is stable at this moment. Ajax exploded really bad. Feyenoord is still rebuilding after Slot left. I thought AZ would be better since their youth team is really good, but they are still searching for how to translate that success to first team.
I hope those clubs find the right path soon as this year, Dutch clubs are getting worse.
i feel schouten(definte) and De ligt (99 percent)is gone for WC..they were really tough players we could hang on VS top teams..
@ Kevin
You kind are on point about salah and I recall saying this plenty the day salah leaves Liverpool will struggle. Well that didn’t happen but consistency he had over 5 seasons you could say has taken a toll on him and again at some point you expect that to happen.
Also if you look at the signing of ekitike, writz and other attacking players to what salah did singly handed previous seasons, I think is not on par. Eg20-25 goals per season.
The other thing you can attribute to
fall is to the coverage provided by the midfield in front of the backline. I have also said this before. Slot has stuck with Gravenberch for entire season and his defensive lapse is well known. He is not a 6 and in the process slot has had endo regulated to the bench. Gravenberch has been influential in attacking phases, some magic moments here and there and average in defense. You go and look at any big game Liverpool had played and you will see gravenberch DEFENSIVE attributes overall and how that influences the game. Also not sure why slot has benched Mac allister also. 4-2-2-2.
Gravenberch is best an 8 like at Ajax when he was flanked by alveraz other wise coming to the Dutch team and in that 6 position you expect the same to happen as in Liverpool
Why is nobody talked about NEC. Surprise package this season. Chery once again showing his quality and it’s a shame how he was overlooked for the Dutch selection. Linssen also further reinforcing the team’s attack. Willems, misidjan, nuytinck other old incoming players. And those Japanese boys further reinforcing the team. They beat PSV twice, drew with Ajax and beat Az and feyenoord both.
Hoping they can pip feyenoord to second place
