One has to keep on pushing the creative juices to come up with fun titles….
The confrontation this weekend between The Netherlands and Sweden will be an interesting one: the Dutch have their world class players at the back, and the more sub-top players on top. The Swedes have it the other way around: their top class acts are their forwards and their defensive line is considered sub-par.
Interesting match up. The Swedes had serious difficulties getting to the 2026 World Cup, conceding 24 goals in 12 matches. They didn’t win a single game until the play off matches and they basically limped into this tournament.
The question will be: will Isak and Gyokeres score more than their leaky defence will concede?

New coach Graham Potter has the answers, for now. The English coach is known for his neat positioning play, but abandoned his vision with this squad. His tactical approach resulted in more wins (3) than defeats (2).
In the play-off games, Potters team had 30% possession but they did create the better chances. And this was also visible in their rout against Tunesia. The Swedes never pressed high, never used the high block but basically folded back to their own third, to absorb pressure and then pounce.
The 5-3-2 of Sweden will give Holland more space to operate in than the Japan set up. The three midfielders will probably be easily pushed from side to side, chasing the ball and it will be hard for them to defend the spaces.
The key thing for Oranje, will be to go from side to side swiftly. The change of sides will allow the full backs (wing backs?) to penetrate and to play in the midfielder/forwards in the half spaces.
Greece played Sweden in this way, and the Swedes had it tough. Their central defenders are not comfortable pushing high up or drifting into midfield, they’re quite static and simply put, not very good.

Here you go: Gyokeres gets the ball, Isak is already on his bike
If Koeman can get the left and right winger (Gakpo and Summerville? ) to press the Swedish backs, Dumfries and Van de Ven (or whoever plays) will have the space to penetrate on the inside as Sweden won’t have logical options to deal with them.
Norway demonstrated this recently in a friendly with Sweden.
Despite the length in their team, Sweden does remarkably bad at set pieces. Their goalie is clearly not comfortable with crosses into the box and Sweden concedes too many goals from these dead ball situations.
The Swedish attacking plans are similar to what we saw with Mourinho’s Inter Milan in 2010 or the Dutch NT in 2014: a block of defenders, when taking possession of the ball, the first pass is forward to Gyokeres, who has the strength to hold of defenders and turn, using his body, to launch the nimble Alex Isak into space.

Isak always lurking
If Oranje can stop these passing into Gyokeres or stop him from playing, we will have taken away one of their main weapons.
Isak is a striker of world class and he will be a danger. He moves in an unpredictable way, and he is quick and very skilful.
We will need top notch communication to make sure we can stop him, as he will always aim to stay away from Virgil.
Even though Sweden plays with five at the back, their approach is not the same as Japan’s. For starters, Sweden hardly plays forward balls through the centre. Only Qatar has played less forward passes through the middle of the pitch. Japan attacked us with two 10s in midfield and one deep striker ( Ueda). Sweden plays with two deep forwards and 3 midfielders behind them and two wide backs.

Sweden’s “Arsenal” tactics
If we play with three central defenders, with Frenkie as the third, we might get him in trouble, as he is not a true man marker. Duels with Gyokeres will not be on the top of his wish list. Also, three defenders versus two attackers can also result in communication break downs (who does what when?).
I will repeat my thoughts, that Oranje is best of playing a 4-4-2 concept. Five defenders is not really the solution for us, and with 4-3-3 or any variation means that our central defenders might be isolated versus their forwards.
I’d play Gakpo as left midfielder to force Sweden to build up on their left side, which is their weaker build up side. Gakpo and Vd Ven will have to deal with blocking the Swedish right channel, leaving either Frenkie or Ryan to be the lock on our door in midfield.
Sweden has adopted the Arsenal corner strategy, pushing people into the goal area, and playing in swinging corners.
Before Japan, Koeman said: “They defend their back line with 3 players, which means we need to keep the field wide with our wingers/backs. That is where the space is. When we gain possession, we need to play forward as soon as possible.”

Lots of space to defend
This will be the same for the Sweden game, I feel. The Swedes are even more vulnerable as their central defenders do not press up.
I do hope Koeman will refrain from bringing slow players when we need to counter attack. Koopmeiners and Memphis are not the players needed in those cases. If we can control Sweden’s strikers, we will have a very good chance to win this game.
My prediction: 3-0 for Oranje. Gakpo scores first, then Malen (finally) and then Summerville again. Japan will beat Tunesia and most likely Sweden too, so I see Sweden finishing third in the group.

Nice analysis Jan! I would think Holland should play 4222. Compact the middle and deprive Gyokeres and Isak getting the thru ball or ball over the top. Gakpo and Summerville can drift into wide areas when on the ball.
I think your 4-2-2-2 is similar to my 4-4-2. I assume the top 2 are the strikers, playing close together and the 2 behind them the wide players (Gakpo and Summerville)? Frenkie and Gravenberch behind them?
@ Jan
Koeman put Summerville on the bench? What do you think of that?
He moves Malen on the wing and starts Brobery
BRRROOBBBBBBBBBBYYYY!!!!!
From Gakpo, left footed no less!
BRRROOBBBBBBBBBBYYYY!!!!!
From Dumfries this time
Ronald Koeman is brilliant!!!!
2nd goal from Brobbey!! Let’s keep it up
Looks like they’re taking their foot off the gas a bit. Slowed down the game. Sweden has been trying to get into some attacking rhythm. Probing here and there. Some decent chances. They need to add as many goals as they can. No time to rest.
Who knew that removing our most dynamic attacking player from the first game would kickstart our attack to this extent in the second game?!
Apparently Ronald Koeman knew 😉
GGGAAAKKKPPPOOOO!!!!!
The best of both worlds! Summerville back in and working together with Dumfries!
See what crossing into the box can do. Goal #3!
GGGAAAKKKPPPOOOO!!!!!!
From Summerville!!!!!
4- – Wow
That was a poor turnover, and then Virgil should’ve challenged the ball, but continued to back off and just not defend whatsoever.
We need to regain control ASAP
I think we must be the quickest team in the world to go from dominant to arrogant! And it comes back to bite us every time
Damn, can’t get a clean sheet ever. So much space left there by the backline. When you’re 4-0 why expose yourself like that?
Just don’t get it. Don’t give them any hope and momentum. Don’t wanna see another comeback story
Kopmeiners and Til in for Reijnders and Frenkie.
Agree! Looking forward to see what Til can do. As a team, we just need to keep the ball and keep attacking, but we just don’t need risky passes at the midfield line.
SSSUUUMMMMMMMMMMMEERRRVVVIIILLLLLLLLLEEEE!!!
I’m insisting that one of my future grandchildren is named Cyrsencio!
Haha.
Go to sleep!!! Summerville!
Despite the 5-1 result at the end , am not convenience bitte Partys ein quality of the team overall !! it seems if you don’t know how to defend our defensive line or health confused sloppy and slow!! Even are beautiful there we’re not pressing nicely !! when Summerville gets the ball everything starts!! He shows the quality off an excellent attacking player.
I hope Somerville can play the next game with that last minutes injury !! All the fans have more expectation froml Malen!!
I think we need to improve and be more smart in this tournament!!
There are some concerns that I think made us kind of weak when we are playing at this level!!
It seems , Van Dijk it’s too slow and heavy ! Van Der Ven was a little bit lost and confused !!! are defensive midfield does not really pressing when we lose the ball… I didn’t see any nice ball distribution to the depth of the sweden defense except two or three opportunities that we had and we give a lot of position to the opponent to do whatever they need to do… This should change if we want to advance to the higher level… And I think Dumfries is also not fully connected with the defensive line and not effective when he’s attacking he’s also out !!! most the time !! what he’s doing on the right side it’s not such a world cup level performance!! And about Cody Gakpo!! he’s kind of very predictable with his dribbling and style of the play!!
I don’t know why the coach doesn’t bring Noah Long as substitute player to use his speed and skills!!!
Again despite the Big win !! I wasn’t really convinced with the quality of the game ,! We were not dominate we lost lot of positions and we were bit lucky that we didn’t receive more goals!
Summerville has been a revelation. That run thru the midfield and pass to Gakpo was sublime. I would even want him as our attacking midfielder than a winger. The Japanese locked up Gakpo with a double team for most of the game. They did not give me much space and chances. But it’s great to see him going.
Brobbey had a great game. He should be the automatic #9 from now on. Don’t want to see Malen in the center. You can see a natural striker like Brobbey had that slight touch to score his 2nd goal. Malen was missing much better chances against Algeria, Uzbekistan, and Japan. If he has to start, let him play right winger and cross on his right foot.
This was Gakpo’s best game in a while. Can he replicate this against tougher opposition to come? If yes, we are in business! He did take on a lot of tackles and was pretty banged up by the end of the game. Koeman should let Noah Lang get some minutes. We do not really need Gakpo vs Tunisia.
Frenkie did very well. He was playing that 6 role covering the defense. To be honest, I really don’t like him sitting that deep and in a physical confrontation with opposition players.
Gravenberch has been amazing so far. I do see him walking around from time to time, but his passing is exactly what this team needs.
Verbruggen made some wonderful saves, but his punch attempt missed that first offside goal by Sweden.
Dumfries made inch perfect passes today. I hope he can replicate that game after game
Van Dijk was ok today. He didn’t make any glaring errors.
Reijnders again was underwhelming. He may need to be replaced by Kluivert.
Memphis got some game time again. Didn’t wanna see him, but a 4-1 game is at least forgivable. He did assist Summerville, so at least something positive. But then again. His legs and lungs are gone.
I’m not sure why Koeman brought Til over Kluivert? His father was sitting in the VIP box with Van de Sar. That would have been nice. Koeman gets credit for a much better lineup with finally using Brobbey in the middle. Still not happy why Malen is starting over Summerville.
I agree not to take this big win and get carried away. Sweden really was bad. And if it wasn’t for the offside, they would have scored 2 more. Our offense carried the day, but that defensive frailty was always there. We are still pushing up so high with half the field wide open for opposition counterattacks.
I guess we will really find out how good we are in the next round. If I’m not mistaken, the Winner of Group F, will win the Runner up from Group C?
If that’s the case, it will be either Brazil or Morocco. Morocco is playing well and Brazil have been underwhelming so far to say the least. But then again, Brazil is Brazil and they can win or lose on any given day.
Good analysis. Thank you
Finally, finally, finally, a game to make you look forward to the next one with confidence.
Each game Van Hecke plays makes it look like Tottenham is getting a bigger and bigger and bigger bargain. Summerville’s agent probably can’t get the grin off of his face. Gravenberch,, top marks. Their best three players over the two games.
Found this analysis of the game on the NYT’s Athletic. Good read, free link.

@Tjeerd, Thank you for posting the link; really good.
It really shows that Van Dijk and Van Hecke need more playing time together, individually great players but man, in these last two games, they have been shaky as hell without the ball. Their pace is off and overlap each other in positioning, this needs to be resolved or the team is cooked.
