After a tantalising match in Rotterdam, where Oranje had to accept the equaliser late in the game, playing with 10 against 11 Spaniards, all eyes were on the second leg in Valencia (23-03-2025).
Would we again be offered a football feast? Or will it be a tense chess match? Or is Holland simply not able to sustain the levels of the Rotterdam game? Valid questions and after 120 minutes of top football and penalties going into sudden death, the answer was clear. Las Rojas and Clockwork Orange are highly entertaining top teams.
How to stop Frenkie de Jong
Spain made some changes to deal with Oranje’s dangerman, Barca’s Frenkie de Jong. Striker Morata and wunderkind Pedri have to make way for workman Dani Olmo (gifted too but also able to make dirty yards) and Oyarzabal who can play as a midfielder and striker. Both players were used to make sure Frenkie did not have the run of the game.
Both players would drop deep, onto their own half even, to make sure the former Willem II midfielder couldn’t dazzle as much.
The use of Oyarzabal as false 9 also helped Spain dealing with Jeremy Frimpong, the mercurial Leverkusen flash had quite some freedom in Rotterdam as Nico Williams would drift after Geertruida, whenever he moved into midfield, leaving Cucurella one on one versus Frimpong.
This time around Williams aids Cucurella on the flank and allows Geertruida to have the freedom in midfield. The former Feyenoord right back had the most touches for an Oranje player in the first half (55). Oyazarbal was dealing with Geertruida more and more leaving space for Van Hecke to be the key build up man.
Second half
In the second half, Oranje finds more solutions for the changes made by Spain. The central defenders realise they have space to build up. In the 48th minute, it’s Virgil who dribbles into midfield and find Depay who offers Kluivert a chance.
And four minites later it’s Van Hecke doing the same with a great cross pass to Gakpo. In both cases, Frenkie de Jong pulls a player away by dropping deep into defense and when Olmo follows him, Van Hecke uses the space to find the Liverpool winger.
And when Van Hecke realises that Olmo decides to stick with Frenkie, the Brighton centre back pushes forward to join into the attack. When he gets the ball from Frimpong, Williams steps out to attack the right centre back, giving Frimpong some space, finally.
His cross results in a foul on Memphis who unpacks the penalty in this 100rd game for Holland and scores the equaliser. Earlier in the game, Van Hecke had given away a penalty after a soft foul in the box.
Oranje starts to boss the game after the equialiser but it’s Spain that would score after a quick transition. Oranje simply forgets the rest defense. Geertruida spots the danger and points (see pic below), but Reijnder is too late to react and Williams is on his bike. It takes Oyarzabal two attempts but he does get the ball into the Dutch net.
With about 15 minutes to play, Koeman decides to bring some fresh attacking legs: Malen, Simons and Lang come in for Geertruida, Gakpo and Kluivert.
Not much later, subs Lang and Xavi Simons create the equaliser after some nifty passing play. Ian Maatsen – almost playing as left winger – is in the box and rams the ball with a vengeance high in the net: 2-2.
Maatsen is almost the Man of the Match in the 90st minute, when he runs into the box in the half space and presents the ball to Memphis who fails to beat Unai Simon.
In the extra time, Spain brings Merino and Pedri and pushes Oranje further back. Zubimendi sticks close to his central defenders and Oranje hardly has a successful press with Xavi and Memphis, so Koeman decides to bring Brobbey.
Ironically, it’s Dutch born Dean Huijsen who has the assist for the 3-2 of Lamal. A nice pass over the defense is taken on perfectly by the youngster and his left foot attempt is too much for Verbruggen.
Dynamic Ken Taylor comes on for Frenkie de Jong and he hassles the Spanish defense in conjunction with Brobbey and Malen and allows Simons to use the gap. Goalie Unai Simon crashes into the RB Leipzig forward and Xavi scores from the spot, to make it 3-3.
The penalty series was a thriller as per usual. Noa Lang’s shot on the bar is nullified by Yamal’s miss as Bart Verbruggen stops that ball, but Malen’s 6th penalty is too weak and Spain can potentially move on to reclaim the Nation League title.
Koeman: “We lost and we’re disappointed of course, but over two matches we were as strong and at times stronger than Spain and that says a lot. I’m very proud of the team and actually quite happy with the performances.
We scored 5 goals against them, which is good and it went down the wire with that lottery at the end. I’m also not unhappy with the effect it has on our World Cup qualifying group, although I really would have wanted to be in the semi finals of this League as well.”
About the penalty against Van Hecke: “I don’t want to say too much about. It felt a soft penalty, but Van Hecke shouldn’t give the ref a chance to give it. Too eager.”
It’s really bittersweet feeling. Bitter bc we are out of Nations League QF, Sweet bc we have earned the praises of many in the world with our play, full of speed, panache and steel. Our team is Back with an aplomb! And an added icing on the cake, a much simpler route to USA’26 WC.
Once we find the perfect CF, the puzzle be completed and come USA’26, many teams will want to avoid us.
Spot on Jan..
its sad that the idiotic pundits is praising koeman Magic..where was this koeman in November?..Its Wim Jonk effect,Its frimpong effect, its frenkie De jong effect..its Geetruida effect.,its kluivert effect
.i am not a fan of geetruida but this guy has helped Frimpong to shine better..That will be over when dumfries comes back..May be with Timber it will work.
Hato was really good apart from his two mistakes,Maatsen can be his back up,i dont know what koeman will do with AKE coems back..Ake is not getting younger..
Antony milambo should get in to NT..this guy is so good, can dribble, can carry ball, can finsh, with immesnse workrate..
What has Malen done so far?what has Brobbey done so far?.Depay is old and looked like a 10 min sub..Dumfries and his injury played a big role in playing these better fluid games..
its time to forget MAlen,Depay,Brobbey and Dumfries..
then its time to test Issac babadi,Joel piroe,Mexx meerdink,Jayden addai and antony milambo..i like Meerdink,he looks more venemous than emegha.
Gakpo,Lang,piroe,Simmons,kluivert,Weghorst,Addai-7
Frenkie,Gravenberch,Reinders,Quinten,koopmeiners,Milambo,-6
Maatsen,Hato,Ake,Virgil,Botman,Deligt,van hecke,Timber,Geetruida,Frimpong-10
Verbruggen,Flekken,Olij-3
No more brobbey,Depay,Malen,Dumfries.
As RWB frimpong is better than Dumfries
As a winger Addai is better than dumfries
As a right Back Timber is 1000 times better than Dumfries
As a right back Geetruida is better than dumfries…
Yes then there is Jaivaro Read, that guy serious talent..i dont think dumfries is better than him..
@Jan, Always enjoy your post game analyses, always more insight in them than most most of what I read.
@Tiju, I’m not sure about your comment on Koeman. There were times when I’ve watched the team over the past couple of years where I wanted to scream. Here though,… they played what is generally considered the best team in Europe (the world?) over two legs, and the only difference between them was that Lang hit the bar in the shoot out. While the game was on, I was also following one of the play-by-play text analysts, who commented how impressed he was by the Dutch tactics (and explaining them), their cohesion, their fight (their physicality, how they were winning more of the 50/50 balls, and each time they fell behind they kept to the task, creating chances, not breaking in a hostile environment with the crowd going crazy, and how effective were the substitions.
It may be that you are correct, that he got lucky, that injuries made the picks for him, and that that in 6 months we’ll be freaking out about a loss to Finland or a draw in Bulgaria, and complaining about his choices, and how nothing fits. But, for now, credit where credit is due. It has been a long while since the team people excited about what might be.
OT, I agree with you about Read. Not sure he is ready for the NT at the moment, or whether he fits playing the rb role with Frimpong at rw, but that young guy oozes talent.
@Andrew …You know when Wim Jonk joined as assistant?..yes Oranje played like Ajax way.its all down to Wimjonk..koeman could not do it for years.Thats why after the arrival of WimJonk we are playing well..
offcourse you cannot compare a hardfeet dumfries who plays on wings with a press resistant lightening fast Frimpong..if you want to play possesion in final third you need to get rid of tired old legs like Depay and hard feet player such as Dumfries, kuyt etc..
Koeman is tactically really poor coach, may be worst than van marwijk..both are afraid of changes ,thats why Depay is still there. Also never gave chance to frimpong by benching Dumfries..it took an injury to force him to do that..
All i said was fact .
Why took Frenkie and kluivert in first when he knows game will only be 90 minutes?
Why played Depay so long in both games?
these all indicates his tactical inefficiency..Wim Jonk can only train oplayers with patterns and style,,its koeman who decides who plays and who comes in as sub and when to sub a player..that means unless an injury he will keep same players always..thats an idiotic symptom of a looser..
@Tiju, I appreciate your reply. There is alot of euphoria around the performance right now, and I am not immune to it. The question it feels like you are posing is whether the team’s performance was in spite of Koeman, not because of him, and you are in the “in spite of” camp. You could be right. I’m not ready to say that. They looked like a team that found what works, and has the foundation for a good run going forward., Feel free to remind me of this statement if they fall off the cliff. 🙂
@ Jan: Thanks always for your analysis.
Let me starts by saying that the Dutch have wasted at least 4 years between Van Gaal and Koeman, Have we had a modern coach with forward looking vision, we would have had a much competitive team by now.
The team played 2 great games but it took these injuries for Koeman to give these young guys a chance.
I thinks Koeman blew the 2nd game by starting with Depay. He was horrible. He lost all the balls. Koeman got the nerves to keep him on the field the entire game. Are you kidding me? What more can you get out of Depay. He is finished. It is time to give these young guys a chance. The world cup is in about a year. Give these young talents a chance so they can be confident. Total nonsense!
@ Jan
Maybe you can comment on that: De Jong is one of our most intelligent and skillful player we have on the field. Why do I fell like is playing as a central back? Why De Jong isn’t playing like a Luka Modric or even a Jude Bellingham. I’m confused. Can you please comment on that?
My last comment is about Geertruida.
I feel like as a defender he is way too easy to dribble pass by.
Geetruida is not starter..so less worried about him..what about koeman who went to brazil to take MEMphis on team to give such pathetic performance?
What about dumfries comes back?
@Andrew..My logical thinking capability forcing me in that way.okay i have some questions for you.
1- Do you think Koeman is the right for NT?
2-All the way till first match against Spain koeman was without wimjonk and we played poor is nt it?
3-All the games we played with dumfries and we played poor at right is nt it?
4-offcourse we won against some minors, but over all play was poor why that changed now if koeman was really good??why could not he do it with out wimjonk,Frimpong?
We have some amazing coaches in Ron Jans,Alex pastoor, may be Eric ten haag and peter Bosz in waiting.i just envied Arjentina they play beautifull football and convincingly beat brazil without refree help..thats what a good coach do..i only saw 2 players Alexis mc alister and Enzo as superstars in that team who plays for liverpool and chelsea..Julian alvarez is so underrated..
we can also do that with a right coach ,a smart coach,Koeman is so stubbon, pathetically dogmatic coach..current changes are due to wim Jonk..if wim jonk departs we will detoriate furthur..
Well, a bummer again loosing to Spain, especially remembering 2010, that one still hurts….
I have hopes for the 2026 World Cup as we played 2 decent agmes against a topteam, maybe the soccer Gods (and Fifa) can decide that now its Hollands turn to be champion…..
Unfortunally Brobbey didn´t get a lot of playtime, but the time he got he didn´t convince…. Maybe time to play without a 9…… Brobbey probably will be pushed out by Ajax for next year if he is second choice he won´t play at WC) and Weghorst will be their first striker….. Can he be our joker for next year, who knows, only the soccer Gods……
@ Jan
I would like for you to comment on my question from yesterday if you can.
Is it one of Koeman’s tactical decision? Why do I feel like as if F De Jong is playing as a central back? Why is F De Jong not our Modric or Jude Bellingham? Gravenberch can certainly play that role as a # 6. De Jong in my opinion should play higher on the pitch behind the strikers and be able to also score goals. He definitely has the skills for that like Bellingham is doing it at Real and Also Modric.
I will need some more time on this as I’m actually prepping an interview with Frenkie
Ok here goes. So Frenkie can play on all midfield spots (as he has ) and central defence. In the youth at WillemII, he would play 10 and score multiple goals, picking the ball up at the goalie, dribbling past 11 opponents and score.
At Ajax, they turned him into a 6. At Barca, he regularly plays like an 8, box to box.
His own preference is 6 now, as he has the game in front of him. He is the one where the game play starts. He looks for space, he looks for the best way forward, like a quarter back. He’s the best we have in playing the ball out from the back, in terms of dribble, or forward pass or pass and move
We have some good alternatives on the 8 position and the only thing that lets Frenkie down, vis a vis a player like Reijnders or Koopmeiners or Q Timber, is his lack of shooting prowess. Frenkie does not have a good shot.
For the 10 position in modern football, he would be too easy to block and he would not be able to affect the game as much as he does as a 6.
When the opponent puts a man marker on him, he can drift, and at times he’ll drop in as a central defender, giving Van Hecke or Van der Ven the option to move forward.
He is good as a 10. Great as an 8. But simply perfection as a 6.
Wow great page , haven’t been back for a long time.
@jan are you back and taking back this site?
very beautiful nice work and always enjoy the articles and comments part!
the dream is still on and i’m still very confident that we will get the cup once in our life time
we got enough defenders. Midfield..,.. hmmm… one or two more talen would do. strikers… wingers…. we need god to give our land a newborn talent striker(s). with a bit of luck…. then we will get the cup either 2026, 28,or 2030.
Hi Yan, yes I did a big update on the website layout as it was not that good on mobile phones. It needed an update urgently. Jan produced some content and is enjoying it but still very busy with his job. Lets see how the website develops, around a game lots of visitors, now lets see if numbers will go up until 2026.
