Friendlies can be tedious, but against a good nation so briefly before the start of a World Cup, it becomes interesting.
In my view, with Haaland and Odegaard, Norway could be a dark horse in the World Cup. They punished Italy twice in their campaign to qualify. They have a solid team and a fantastic mentality. But… so do we (team, I mean, maybe less so the mentality).
Koeman had a problem to fix and he may have found the solution: what to do with the right wing position. When Dumfries plays – and he does when fit – he needs a particular partnership, to allow him to bomb forward, while his defensive tasks are taken over by someone else.
Koeman tried Xavi Simons but he is too much a forward and lacking defensively and physically. He tried Malen, but despite the Roma loanie’s speed in attack, his defensive work is woeful. Frimpong was tested but he seems to make the same positional choices as Dumfries, meaning they get in each other’s way.
Koopmeiners played a good role on the right
Koeman noted the resurgence of Teun Koopmeiners at Juve. The former AZ skipper had a tough time in Turin (as did the whole team) but slowly he is becoming that important player again. And at Atalanta, Gasparini used him as a false right winger, so why not give him a go. He is strong in the duels, he has a terrific kick in both feet and he’s disciplined in his tasks.

First game for Kees Smit
Oranje played a decent game and Koeman allowed young Kees Smit his debut as holding mid next to Gravenberch. He found it tough, that was clear. The pace in Oranje is higher than in the Eredivisie or the Conference League and he will have noticed.
He needs to speed up more, but he demonstrated his bravery and at times his vision and passing skills as well. He will not be satisfied with his debut, but it is clear that better times will come and most likely, come swiftly.
Not 4-3-3
Koeman used the box, or the square in midfield again, with Reijnders popping up next to striker Malen when possible, but folding the team back to a 4-4-2 when Norway had possession. This system is tough against a 5 man defence, but versus Norway’s shape, it worked ever so well.
The only issue: who picks up Ryerson? The Norway right back was free whenever Gakpo had to press and Norway’s opening goal started there. Kees Smit found himself playing wingback or full back against the Nore and he wasn’t able to block the cross which eventually resulted in Schjelderup’s goal. A beauty, and Verbruggen can’t be blamed for it, but Dumfries should have done better, like Smit.

Arne Slot emphasises the importance of set pieces in every interview and when you have Koopmeiners or Reijders on kicking duties and the likes of Van de Ven, Van Dijk, Dumfries and Gakpo in the box, you know what Slot means. It’s no coincidence therefore that Virgil scored a scorching header from a class Koopmeiners corner kick. Straightforward and simple.
Oranje’s winning goal was the result of sloppy play by the visitors and smart and aware play by Liverpool winger Gakpo. Dumfries was still lurking up front and his pass was killed off with aplomb by Reijnders: 2-1.
What can we conclude after this match?

As mentioned, Koeman deserves praise for the solutions he found (although the praise will probably have to go to Jonk more than anyone else). Tactical tweaks are always key when playing a large tournament. Fitness, form, mentality, tactics, you don’t have much time in between matches to perfect the next game, so tactical flexibility (from the coach AND players is key).
Kees Smit has not set the world on fire, but he demonstrated enough for me, to see that in the future, he will take over Frenkie’s mantle.
Koopmeiners’ partnership with Dumfries deserves more. The Juve player was his old self again: swagger, neat on the ball and making the right choices.
Reijnders seems sure of a spot, with Kluivert injured and Simons less influential. The City midfielder makes run after run and is always available to score a goal. His work rate is exemplary.
Gravenberch, Van de Ven, Virgil, Van Hecke, Dumfries, Verbruggen, Malen… they all performed the way you’d expect them to.
The next match on Tuesday will probably feature some other players ( Brobbey to start? Valente in midfield? Q Timber from the start?) and by then we should be able to fill in all the names for the WC squad.
Tell me the players you love to see start for Oranje? Koopmeiners or Simons? Van Hecke or De Vrij? Hato or Van de Ven? Lang or Gakpo?

Simons, De Vrij, Hato, Ake and Lang should be given their start. Also Geetruida or Frimpong. Basically to checkout the second team here for this international.
I would think Kees Smit, Koopmeiners will start Vs Ecuador, to further assess them. Van Dijk will likely start b4 replace by Ake. Likewise Dumfries b4 replace by Geetruida/Frimpong. Will be wise to not make wholesale changes from the beginning/get-go.
I don’t think Smit and Koopmeiners will play. They usually don’t start players twice for friendlies. Verbruggen will start, Virgil maybe with Hato, or maybe Ake. Valente will start as well I think. And Brobbey and Frimpong.
I thought Van de Ven, Gakpo, Van Hecke, Reijnders were the best players, Gravenberch had his moments. As you say, Koopmeiners was good in his role, and it is important not to waste corner opportunities, Still, it would be nice to have more of a playmaker at that spot, someone who tilts the defense…so, Frimpong (and I freely admit, I am biased, one of my favorite players). As for the other spots you mention: Van de Ven, Van Hecke, Gakpo.
I do agree. I can see Koopmeiners qualities and do like him but he is a bit too one-paced for me and another passer of the game. I’d like to see more of a dribbler like Wirtz or Musiala or Pedri in that attacking role. Xavi, Kluivert maybe Valente. If you have Frenkie, Gravenberch, Reijnders and Koopmeiners in the box, they are mostly similar in how they play. But if that helps us win games, I’m all for it. Summerville would also be an option for the creative midfielder role.
i Was relived to see finally seeing real set piece taker like koopmeiners takes corners and freekicks..That guy has deadly shots in his boots..Our every set peiece threat was spoiled by Memphis.,We were never able to use th real arial threat of Virgil,De ligt,Ake,Van devn ,van hecke,Gakpo and Dumfries with memphis taking ever kicks…Our real right winger is frimpong not koopmeiners..
I was impressed with Quinten,koopmeiners..i think its time to drop wout Weghorst and convert Gakpo to center..
Lang,Summerville LW
Gakpo,Memphis,Brobbey as striker
Malen and Frimpong as RW—-7 Forwards-nos
Frenkie,Gravenberch,Reinders,Schouten,Simons,koopmeiners,Quinten -7 Nos mid fielders
Verburggen.Roefs,Flekken as 3 Goal keepers
Hato,Ake as left backs
Van deven ,Virgil as LCB
Van hecke,De ligt(if he recovers from injury)/De vrij as RCB
Timber ,Geetruida as RB
9th Ddefender for is Maatsen not Dumfries.
Ok. This does it for me. It’s official. Emmanual watches games by Albania and Gibraltar, but with the sound of a Netherlands game so he thinks Memphis and Gakpo and Kuyt and Blind are worth. Memphis is the all time leader in assists in the Oranje (35 assists, and also top goal scorer of course). He has 37% accuracy in his crosses.
Memphis is not a world renowned set piece specialist like Alexander-Arnold or Luka Modric, but his numbers are really very good. He would be in the top tier of Europe. The Dutch rotate the corner kick duties, it is not always Memphis.
I dont like the idea of scarificing a winger for Koopmeiners (midfielder) as mentioned so that dumfries can play in that attacking role. frimpong and timber combo in my opionn is the best to go with as frimpong has always been a menace whenever he has played. he really stretches the defenders with his speed and those cut back passes to the arriving midfielders in and around the box has been top notch and in creating good scoring opportunities. the draw back with dumfries as always and as seen many times is when vs dominant attacking teams, when his defensive workload increases, his attacking game fades and this really impacts that flank. I think vs Acuna (Argentina) last world cup was very evident.
yes, he always gets into good positions popping up near the back posts but if get a team with a good defensive line, what do you expect to happen.
I agree with Wilson on this one. Timber is one of the best RB’s in world football and Frimpong is so versatile and skilled. There were moments in the Norway game where Dumfries had a simple pass to make to Gakpo or Reijnders and completely mishit it, chance gone. There was also a situation where three Oranje players were using their quick feet to get out of trouble in a triangle and Dumfries being the last on the ball flunked it with his hard feet.
I am a fan of Denzel in terms of his personality. He is a great guy. Lots of energy and strong in the air, but his limited ball skills disrupt the flow more often than not.
I watch Timber play for Arsenal and I am constantly in awe. His discipline, his runs, his timing, his touches, he’s a tremendous talent and needs to play. Van Dijk and Van Hecke is a good partnership too and with Vd Ven on the left, we have a top class defense. Ryan can sit a bit deeper, with the Frenkie more in the Barca role and then it’s up to the situation whether we play Reijnders, Kluivert or Simons as 10. Or Valente, or even Summerville?
Yep. I like Dumfries for all the reasons Jan says, and in addition, that in a dust up, he’ll be the first one in…but, one more thing about him that has me concerned…WC against Quarter-finals, penalty, Euro semi-finals, penalty. Can’t have that.
Timber at rb makes the defense better, both by his individual talent, and positionally, as they are not creating space for the Opp. by playing Dumfries so far up the field…as far as offense goes, no need to go any further than how dangerous the team was against Spain with Frimpong as rw and a more traditional rb behind him, more balanced, more spread out, less of too many players in the same area ….Now that we all agree, can we write a strongly worded letter to Koeman? 😉
Excellent analysis. I’m on it!
I would like to see Timber and Frimpong combi working together, see how that goes. Too bad its not going to happen again anytime soon, Dumfries will play today against Ecuador.
Maybe the group stage we can see this couple, and based on that Koeman will decide or adapt.
Denzel Dumfries is simillar to kuyt hardworking, but hard feeted cannot dribble pass a player, cannot keep the ball on feet and distribute to a better postioned player..Both were flow breakers of dutch team for a long time…This wont be noticed vs minnows because we win,But VS top teams They were exposed many times…
ITS CRIMINAL OFFENSE TO START DUMFRIES OVER TIMBER.thats all i can say.
I think you are correct on Dumfries, but Kuyt had a lot of functional technique. His touch was impeccable. Not a dribbler, of course, but his one touch play was fine.
@Jan We should have done with Blind from 2020..He was turtle slow as left back, always afraid to commit going forward,He stayed bcak in nig games and we were F@##3ked in those game…
A fit memphis can play last 20 minutes of current dutch team, not as starter..under any circumstance never allow him to take set piece when koopmeiners and Simons on feild.
Ok I am not going to respond to the Blind comment (again). I can only say that in Girona, they’re very happy to have him. Just sayin’. Conclusion: Girona also has a coach that doesn’t understand football, I suppose.
Koeman said today that Memphis needs to be 100% fit and in form to earn a ticket to the World Cup. I like it. No more half injured players tagging along and then all the stories are about him trying to get fit. I mean, he was important for us, but he is not Messi.
